What are your commitments for this school year?
This school year I am employed at the Jundt Art Museum where I work between 6 to 10 hours a week during the school day and weekends. In addition, I am a Campus Kids mentor. I spend time every week with a student in the 5th grade doing activities ranging from school visits, games, and tutoring. This semester I plan to become more involved with the club Mans Best Friend and volunteer at the local animal shelter.
Have you held any leadership positions before? If so what are they? Please list what organization/team you held the position for too!
During high school i participated in many extra circulars, but I never took on any leadership rolls because of social anxiety. Coming to Gonzaga my goal

I have always wanted to join a sorority and although I love Gonzaga and I am very happy with my decision I felt like I was missing out. I am drawn to Alpha Pi Phi specifically because of the strong focus on sisterhood. In addition, as I got to know members of Alpha Pi Phi I enjoyed the fact that all of the girls are very unique and each bring their own unique qualities to create one united sisterhood.
What are some stereotypes you’ve heard about Greek life and what would you do to challenge them?
Stereotypes that I have heard about Greek Life include that it is just about partying and the members are fake or catty. To challenge this stereotype I would lead by example to prove to others that Greek Life does not focus on partying, but in fact focuses on forming friendships, learning, and helping others. By showing others that those in Greek Life are more focused on school and philanthropy it can have an affect on changing this stereotype for many Greek organizations. There is also a very common stereotype that girls in sororities are catty or fake. To challenge this stereotype at Gonzaga I would show other students that members of Alpha Pi Phi are dedicated to forming a strong sisterhood that values uniqueness and diversity. Valuing others for who they are conveys the message that there is no need to be fake because you are accepted for your
A time I held a leadership position was this year for DECA. I was an involved member of DECA as a freshman, and I had been thinking of running for the vice president position as a sophomore. What really solidified my reservations was when the DECA teacher, Mrs. McGhee, asked me to run for an office. She told me that she noticed I was an invested member and that I would be a good asset to the board. I was so thankful she made this comment because that position in DECA was one of the things that really sparked my interest in leadership, and it helped me to learn more about how I lead. I was stressed at first because I was the first underclassman to ever be in a DECA officer position. When I showed up to the first officer meeting the next year,
I learned so much about the things I was capable and not capable to do and about the foundation of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. The lovely ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. always made me feel very comfortable to the point that I was able to be myself around them. However, when I tried that with the other sorority members it did not felt the same way. The other sorority made me feel left out and uncomfortable when being around them and that’s something that Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. did not. Being able to talk one on one, ask for help and talk to the ladies like a regular friend was one of the reason why I chose Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority
I think the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc is to cultivate and inspirit high scholastic and ethical standards among college women. I also believe the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to alleviate quandaries concerning girls and women in order to help improve their convivial stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college likeness and to serve the community. commitment, confidence, being flexionable, being able to work with people, honesty, integrity. I think I would contribute a lot to a sorority in terms of academics, creative, vocally,
Coming into college most students struggle to find a place where they fit in. Greek life provides individuals the opportunity to find people that are similar to them and share the same values as they do. In the article
The three main reasons I am excited to join a sorority include my personal development, loyalty and friendship, and support of my aspirations. As a sister, there is an expectation of social interaction and personal development. I am confident that my experience and communication skills will be enriched by the activities that I participate in, the responsibility I take, and the people I meet. I am looking forward to making friends for life. I think that the atmosphere and set up of a sorority fosters and encourages the development of lifelong friendships through common aims and shared experiences. I also believe that sorority life emphasizes and encourages loyalty to and among the sisterhood, my school and the nation. Support from my sisters
When one first thinks of Greek life or a sorority the only thing that comes to mind is the social aspect. Most people don’t think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture, with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However, these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. Greek organizations are good examples of how institutions can affect and be affected by social status and roles within the collegiate community. They are also a prime example of how race, class and gender can affect a social setting in both positive and negative manners.
Now a days when people see Greek letters on a house or an individual wearing them on their chest, I feel a lot of people with the exception of the few people who truly know what it is to be Greek, see us as the way we are portrayed in movies and TV shows. Party crazed animals with no respect to individuals their school or their community as a whole. To be honest, before getting involved in a fraternity and Greek life, I had similar thoughts to this ideal that all Greek life would have in store for me was drinking and Partying my life away with not much else to offer witch made me skeptical to truly get involved. After just a short of being involved I see
To start off, there are various factors that have motivated me and continue to motivate my desire to be a member of Alpha Pi Sigma. For example, creating enduring bonds with girls around my age that acknowledge my origins, culture and traditions. As well, an important motivation to join the sorority is establishing a network of strong women who work hard to succeed and accomplish their goals. Mainly, I know that by joining Alpha Pi Sigma I will not only find a group of friends but, a study group and women ready to inspire one another to succeed. Another thing that motivates me is being able to help the Latino community and perform philanthropist work aimed at cancer survivors and patients. Lastly, a critical motivator is recognizing that through the sorority I will be able to build amazing memories and learn more about myself and who I am.
I believe the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is to grow and develop women scholastically and to help women reach their goals. This organization is noted for its extensive service, reaching beyond college campuses. The purpose is also to stay dedicated and committed to academic excellence. Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., not only give back to their community but are also leaders, uniting women to have a positive impact on others. Joining a sisterhood such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is a lifelong commitment. Since Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. starts in the collegiate years, the skills you learn can help later on in life. It is also preparation for working with people with different personal and professional backgrounds. Also, to be aware of what is going on around you and how you can make an impact. Young women looking for mentorship can have a positive
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and
It is funny, but sometimes as a Greek myself, I can hear myself, stereotyping people on the way they act, dress, look, etc., as to what Organization?s ideals I could see them most easily conforming to. Then as the ?good Greek? that I am I introduce these people to prospective Organizations where I think they would fit in, not really giving them a second thought as to where they think they should go. This is how some are influenced to ?conform? and join an organization.
The leadership positions that I hold include being a captain of the football team, a co-chair of the National Honor Society, and a co-chair for the Black Awareness Society for Education. Holding these positions has been both a honor and a struggle. Having so many responsibilities at the same time was a daunting task at first, but as the years progressed, I became more and more accustomed to the task.
Over several decades, Greek life has been an integral part of colleges and universities throughout the United States. There is a high demand of “fitting in” in today’s society and a question that students, parents, and teachers alike often ask themselves is, “Does Greek life provide a more safe or harmful environment?” With strong evidence, it is absolutely absurd to believe that fraternities and sororities do more good than they do harm. Various statistics provide factual evidence as to why Greek life is a toxic and dangerous environment for many young adults. Between the rape culture, hazing, and delinquency linked to the students associated with Greek life, it is time that it comes to an end for good so that students may have a more safe and enjoyable college experience. Fraternities and Sororities should be banned off of college and university campuses due to the danger and drama associated with them.
By participating in Greek life, the students’ social circles are expanded. Because sororities and fraternities are specific to gender, religions, races, and even majors, those who participate in Greek life create lifelong relationships with people they choose to associate with by
A strong example of my leadership experience is my senior season of football. Following the 2016-2017 academic year, our head coach resigned on short notice and lacked any coach to fill the position. Because he left on such short notice, we didn’t have a coach for the first two weeks of the preseason, a crucial developing point in the season. However, a small group of other seniors and I were able to schedule workouts until we got a new coach. This established our group as team leaders and allowed us to lead the team to success in the regular season. I was later named a team captain for my leadership on and off the field. This gave me the ability further lead by example as well as keep the team’s morale up in the face of adversity. I ran extra
