The story “All She Has, $150, 000, Is Going To A University” by Rick Bragg is an perfect example of how to keep readers intrigue when telling a compelling story. In fact, I could tell the author was passionate about this particular topic from the descriptive elements he used in the story. The overall structure of this story is descriptive as well. “She spent almost nothing, living in her old family home, cutting the toes out of shoes if they did not fit right and binding her ragged Bible with Scotch tape to keep Corinthians from falling out” is a good example of how Bragg uses the elements of description. I can picture this scene in my mind, which McCarthy is sitting in a rocking chair fixing her Bible, so it will not fall a part. It is easy for a reader minds to get trap into the small details in a story. This feature story can be classified as a personality profile story. A personality profile story focuses on one specific person, in this case, that person is Oseola McCarty. One goal of creating this type of feature story is to interview a great …show more content…
This story is different from other stories that we have read in class because it is more relatable. For instance, I thought about my grandmother and how she loved helping other people in their time of need. Also, the structure of this story was very effective and every little detail connected to one another. I like how Bragg uses different emotions for the direct quotes. In fact, I could tell that he had spent a lot of time with Miss. McCarthy from the direct quotes. “I live where I wanted to live, and I live the way I wanted to live,” she said. “I couldn’t drive a car if I had one. I’m too old to go to college. So I planned to do this. I planned it myself” is one of my favorite quote from the story. This quote is saying that McCarthy is content with her life and donating money to help someone do the things she never got to do, makes up for the time she
A lot of people use very general ideas to make (and critique) “good” writing- when there are some slightly more specific things to look for. If you’re looking for an example of good writing, however, look no further. In the story, “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, the author uses descriptive writing to develop a mood, and figurative language to develop characters.
An individual can learn a lot from people that are very different from them. I feel that this story was written to illustrate that point. The story tells us about a man named Charlie Lavery who was twenty six years old and believed that he was capable of taking care of himself no matter what the situation.
A good story is always structured with details that are easy to follow while intriguing readers with reality and emotions. Edwidge Danticat’s memoir has proven her ability to use descriptions that allows the text and the readers to connect. Through her writing, she is able to get the reader involved in her situation, so that it is as if they are experiencing it too. Adding on, Danticat cleverly writes each type of description in a way that makes them distinct from each other. This connects the two which adds to her message. Descriptions bring life to her story and stresses the real events that happened to her and her family which displays her message effectively. That being said, without objective and subjective descriptions, any piece
She illustrates that had it not been her mother that obstructed her “I wouldn’t be livin’ like this, you bet. ”(81) and that her dreams could’ve came to fruition. She tells him next how lonely she gets and “I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.”
An example of this is when Peyton Farquhar, the main character of the story, finds out that the Owl Creek Bridge is being repaired by the Union army. Farquhar, is a rich plantation owner and a confederate sympathizer, he learns from a confederate soldier that if he can sneak past the Union guards, he can destroy the bridge and help out the confederate army. The goals of the story is to show the reader that sometimes no matter what we do in life, sometimes things are meant to be and no matter what you can’t change them. Some of the characteristics of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge are the high amount of detail in the story from the characters to the plot itself. Another characteristic of the story is the lack of dramatic elements throughout the story.
The way the author chose to tell the story reminds me of when you hear a story over a couple of beers with a close friend. Maybe the stream of time gets tripped up, maybe they backtrack or fib, but you know that you’re in for a good tale anyway. I like a story like that. It makes this story very relatable and personal for the reader.
Imagery is used flawlessly in this short story. O’Connor uses descriptive adjectives fairly often to paint a picture in the reader’s mind and to add spice to her
When I came to America I experienced generalization about American culture because here different culture and people behave differently. At the beginning it was hard for me to adapt to host culture but overtime I stared to acquire American culture. However, I still remember my own culture because my background plays big role. I think the same idea applies to the werewolves because now they started to know more about host culture but they think that their culture is better. It's hard for girls to generalize host culture because they don't want to change their
The story “The Flowers” by Alice Walker was the best example of description. The author gives really good detail and makes it easy to picture the story in your head. An example of a point where she used good detail is in the first paragraph when she said, “... made each day a golden surprise that caused excited little tremors to run up her jaws.” the author could have just said that harvesting made her excited but she made us feel how excited she was. Another point where she used good detail was in the third paragraph when she described when she saw the water rising up and going down stream as “... tiny white bubbles disrupt the thin black scale of soil…”. Also another point that caught my attention where she used great description was when
From the very first paragraph of the narrative, I noticed that there were several details that the narrator mentioned that required further, deeper thought. For me, this is what made the story appealing.
Each style has a distinctive purpose: some tell a story, some describes and others may persuade a viewpoint. I learned that descriptive essays have text which generally describes something in great detail. Whatever is being defined requires a broad research of trustworthy sources. The thing I liked most was researching and finding out new information on my topic. However, my greatest trouble was involving the reader’s emotion into my essays or writings. Nonetheless I realize that by involving the reader's emotions my writing gives a more vivid detail that makes the reader feel like he or she is actually there.
Perhaps the largest distinction between humans and all other animals on earth is the ability to both create and appreciate fine art. The musical art form has existed for thousands of years, and has allowed different cultures to express themselves and connect with one another. The most primitive sounds were simply drum hits and clapping, but over time music has grown in sophistication. Now, complicated symphonies can be heard in halls all across the world, with a large variety of wind, brass and percussion instruments. This development of music over a large period of time reveals that music is fundamental to being human, that humans need music. Unfortunately, the U.S. education system is moving away from this very important human process. Now, officials see music as recreational and unnecessary. However, music education is a vital component of education because of its proven benefits to students. These benefits include not only higher academic performance as evidenced by higher test scores, but also specific improvements in job-skills.
Writers can use many tricks to make a story seem more interesting to the reader. From the words they pick to the setting to the time of the day... the possibilities are endless. In the story "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe, the use of light and darkness, the description of the mans eye and the time frame make the story more scary than anything else. Poe also uses suspense at the end to make the readers heart beat faster.
Shelley, the poet, once claimed, “poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world” (Orwell xxvi). This can be applied to the author of Animal Farm, George Orwell, because in his novel, he describes the Soviet Union in a satirical way. His novel tells the story of some farm animals who revolt and take control of the farm that they live on.
In Adrienne Rich's essay, "Claiming an Education", the author speaks about the female experience against the male-dominated academic scene. Despite the fact that this essay was written in 1979, a number of Rich's points seem timeless. Rich encourages young women to insist on a life of meaningful work. As a seventeen-year-old student, I have often heard from my female companions that they anticipate a higher education as an opportunity to hunt down a spouse. The frequency and zeal of this conclusion, seeing education only as means of marriage, strikes me as particularly pitiful and archaic. Adrienne Rich’s thesis in “Claiming an Education” aptly expresses the array of roles women hold in societies, the benefits, and weaknesses of our education system, as well as the struggles that women are exposed to. She successfully develops her thesis statement by the effective use of a variety of methods of development and various literary devices to improve her writing quality and to help readers interpret her message. I agree with Rich’s thesis statement because education entails being responsible for oneself, not just for women, but for all students.
