All In The Mind: All In The Brain Surgery

Similar to Susan Blackmore’s essay “Strange Creatures” Lauren Slater’s essay “Who Holds the Clicker?” questions the idea of who really has control of our minds. In Blackmore's essay, the thesis was very clear stating: “ what makes us different is our ability to imitate” ( Blackmore, 33). In Slater’s essay, the thesis wasn't very clearly stated. In my opinion, I feel that the thesis statement of this essay was that sometimes tampering with a patient's mind might have a positive effect. Sticking to my thesis in the previous paper I still feel that we as humans have control of our minds. But the mind and the brain are two different things. Although we might have control of our minds I don't think we have control of our brain.

John called asking when a part for his cup holder would be in. He was told two days so he went ahead and made a service appointment when the part would be in to ensure everything could get done at the same time. When it comes to the topic of having a growth mindset, most of us will readily agree that students who are praised are motivated to learn. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how they are praised. Whereas some are convinced that praising students for their intelligence will motivate them to learn, others maintain that encouraging them for their efforts has a better impact on their motivation.

At first sight, Brain Surgeon might not seem like an appealing or worthwhile book. Afterall, the cover is plain, the title is far from original, and the size is quite shy from “sheer”. However, this book is anything but mediocre. Within 200 pages, the author manages to compress 7 patients stories, countless personal stories of his own, and innumerable amounts of medical terminology. While most certainly a daunting, task, Keith Black takes it on with relative ease. He does it through shockingly simple and yet elegant forms; repetition of concepts, style of narration, and overall credibility.While he does not excel in all of them individually, as a unit, the effect is astounding. The concept of neuroplasticity has long been questioned. The term of “neuroplasticity” did not even come about until the mid-late 20th century. When the term “plastic” was used to describe the brain by a select few neuroscientists, they were laughed at and the term was never thought of as a description for the human brain.
