Would you rather read fiction or nonfiction books? In some countries they are starting to take fiction books out of schools. The book I am reading is “ All American boys” by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiley. This book is about a young teenage African American boy getting physically assaulted by a white police officer. All American boys is a fiction book, however it has many life lesson and real life events that we may not always be aware of. Despite the school board’s recent segment regarding the lack of fuel that fiction provides, fiction should remain in the school’s curriculum. I make this statement due to the fact that fiction books teach people life lessons. Secondly, some people dislike reading books that aren't fiction because people do not get the opportunity to use their imagination …show more content…
School districts feel they need to take out fiction books because they feel the non fictions books have more benefits than fiction books. Some believe that non fiction book are more accurate than fiction books because they focus on real life events. They think that if they take out fiction books everyone will read non-fiction books and people will understand and learn what life is really like. I have found an article, and in this article it talks about how a school district took out some fiction books from the school. The students were affected because if they start taking fiction books now, then what will the students generations from now read? Now it's not only affecting us, it's affecting other generations after us.I think we should have a say in what we read and what we don't. If school districts make us read only non fiction books ,then most of the students in the schools won't be as interested to read because the books may not be ast interesting. Schools districts across America are removing a fundamental part of educational
After the release of the record breaking Australian documentary Bra Boys: Blood is Thicker than Water, there have been a lot of conflicting feelings about the controversial gang, whether they are upstanding members of society who are misunderstood or are violent thugs.
“It’s not books you need; it’s some of the things that once were in books” Page 82 of Fahrenheit 451. I agree with this statement completely because many of the topics in many books are beneficial to know. However, I believe that certain concepts portrayed in books are one sided and vague and not completely suited to teach young or maturing minds the concepts they attempt to portray. I personally believe that books should be censored, at will, by parents who believe they have a more appropriate way to teach their own son or daughter about the topics they are censoring from them. I must add that banning all books as Fahrenheit 451 suggests is not the answer. Many literary works have the same concepts but teach these concepts from different viewpoints
Many schools are taking books out of their curriculum because of the harsh and uncomfortable language and topics. The Biloxi School District had taken To Kill A Mockingbird out of their classrooms and Drake High School had even burned all copies of Slaughterhouse -Five. It is wrong that schools began taking books like that from their lesson plan because students should not be oblivious to these kinds of topics and it is sending the wrong message about the authors and their books.
Starvation within the White Walls, 1 “(The hunger for love, belonging, and hope is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread)(Mother Teresa)”. Richard Wright, a young black boy fighting racial prejudice within the South, longs for love, hope, and freedom. The bars of the South’s unjust culture imprisons Richard’s weakening body; for hunger, a physical and mental void, overcomes his remaining essence. Hunger consumes Richard’s embodiment, as his former ravenous self depletes into a shell of the past. Within the classic novel Black Boy, hunger comes to symbolize the absence of love, innocence, and hope within young Richard’s life.
“The scars and stains of racism are still deeply embedded in the American society.” -John Lewis. All American Boys, by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely is about a teenage black boy, Rashad, that is brutally beaten by a police officer, and the best friend of the cousin of the police officer that beat Rashad, who witnessed the beating. The theme throughout this book is that racism changes the images of people in many different ways. This is shown in a few different ways throughout the book, one of them being the pictures and drawings of Rashad and that Rashad drew.
If there has been one quality that I have retained all my life it would be my drive. I have always been driven to succeed and move forward. From an early age I knew I wanted to achieve two things: travel the world and become a lawyer. My passion for law came from an experience I had at Boy’s State and my dreams of travel came from growing up in a secluded mountain town.
Book banning in high schools has been going on for many years most books are banned because of its sexual content or its blasphemous tic dialog also some people don't like that they may have witchcraft or fairy tales because they don't want their kids to actually believe in something that's not real (Butler University, 2016), Parents believe that these
We all know that when you get away with something your not supposed to be doing you get this certain rush. People like that feeling so they'll do it over and over again. Now, if you think about it, if they didn't ban certain books how many kids would actually read it? If people didn't make a big deal about it, how many kids would know that the book is bad and shouldn't be read at school? When you take the right to read a book away it just makes kids want to read it more. So instead of censoring what books are school friendly, and making a big deal about it, just leave it be and see what happens. Because, if the government keeps controlling this, a bigger problem will rise.
According to the American Library Association, the most common group of people, challenging a book being read in schools, was the parents of the students. Parents have a right to be in charge of what is put into the minds of their students, however just because one parent objects does not mean that the whole school should ban the book from the list. A solution for this book would be to enforce parental consent for books to be read in the classroom. If a parent does not want a book to be read in the classroom, then there should be other options for the student to read. The school and teacher should not trespass on a parent’s rights of raising their child. I believe that if a parent has a concern, they should go and discuss the problem with the teacher so that the teacher will be able to defend their reasoning for choosing the book to be read in the classroom.
Book bannings is censorship. It prevents the spread of ideas among the student populace. And while one can understand keeping more mature books away from middle schoolers and younger, since they have years before they have to be an adult, there is no valid argument for banning books for high schoolers. They have between 0 and 4 years until they have to start being an adult, outside of school, and if we keep new and more mature ideas away from them, that keeps them from being the best adult they can be. New concepts in books may be scary, but we still can’t keep them from it, they have their right to read what they wish. Even if alternate solutions have to be used on certain students, humanity is not going to become savage, and immature from
Books are a gateway to a world of imagination, but some schools are trying to shut those gates off by banning them. Books are some of the best teachers left, it's not up to a school to decide what a child should or should not read. Banning books can deprive a child of the opportunity to think. Books should not be banned because of the lessons they can teach, the fact that a school should not even be able to ban them, and it can deprive a child of the opportunity to think.
The school board is not quite certain that schools should continue to include fiction in the curriculum. However, if fiction is taught to students it may actually teach life lessons. Fictional literature can change someone's perspective on, what problems we may come across. For instance, a fictional book can help us relate to all the controversial problems that do occur in today's society. I disagree with the school board's thoughts about completely banning it. This type of literature can deepen our knowledge and teach us about things that we don’t experience on a day to day basis.
The book All American Boys, by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely takes place in the United States, although the state is left unspecified. The time period is also unconfirmed, but through assumption it can be estimated that it takes place in modern day time. Where it connects to American History isn’t exactly a specific section, but moreso just racial tension in general, linking the book to various parts of history. The main characters in All American Boys are Rashad and Quinn. Rashad is an African American boy who gets into an accident while at a convenience store, causing a police officer to assume that he was stealing. The policeman then proceeds to brutally beat Rashad, despite his compliance. Then there is Quinn, a white boy who, while
Books are being banned and kept from people throughout the world, and it removes the ability of people being able to read them. I believe that by banning books it creates negative effects on children and it might even eliminate some life lessons for children. Going through life is tough enough as it is, but not knowing what's on the outside of "rainbows and unicorns" can be detrimental, some kids might not be able to handle life too well once they're out in the real world, because they won’t know how to do it, and some books can teach them the basics. Parents are always trying to “protect”" their children from the "bad things" in life. Parents like to do what in their opinion is good for children, even if it means they are wrong and instead
Some people do not realize that they affect the education of their children by banning certain books. The banning of books is banning the author's right to free speech which can hinder the education of Americans. In schools teachers have to worry about what readings they present to their students because they could have any parent coming after them for exposing their children to “heinous” or “bad” things when all it truly is, is literature used to broaden
