Imagine waking up on a seemingly-normal morning to the sound of screams coming from the streets, and the unsettling feeling of dread lingering in the air. Harsh, bright lights shine through your window and local news stations report a startling disturbances taking place throughout the entire town. It is then that you realize there has been an alien invasion of Earth. This strange situation leads humans to pose the following question: what is the appropriate response to an alien invasion? People often question the legitimacy of extraterrestrial life, but, if the earth does encounter life forces from another world, how should people react? In the science fiction genre, alien invasions are a recurrent theme, but, although they may be entertaining, …show more content…
Due to this fear, the government acts defensively, without realizing how unnecessary it is. This behavior causes the alien to reciprocate with violence, too. The government’s actions ultimately causes unnecessary damage and harms more people than were originally affected. In this situation, people acted on the assumption that aliens would be violent. As previously stated, extraterrestrial life is unpredictable, but not necessarily aggressive. On the contrary, the movie “Arrival” features humans taking the time to learn about the aliens through scientific exploration before taking aggressive measures against the creatures. The people are able to work together and use cognition and intuition to figure out a way to communicate with the aliens and learn about them. This method of interaction with the aliens protects the people, rather than endangering them, as seen in “The Iron Giant”. Compared to how a violent defense would have played out, this procedure proves to be much safer by the end of the movie. Between these two sci-fi movies, the strategy used by the second author was more efficient and helpful, proving it to be the correct approach to handling an alien …show more content…
One significant factor to consider is the alien’s technological advancements, which are likely much greater than ours. Further, it is important to remember that these organisms probably won’t share many similarities with us physically or mentally. They may not share our senses of sight, hearing, or touch, and they could use some form of communication that is currently inconceivable to us. No matter what the traits of these aliens may be, history has shown that just because something may not look or act the same as us, does not mean they need to be a threat to us. It may be challenging to control the media or to calm the public, but, no matter the danger potential of the aliens, this may be one of the highest priorities. History has also shown us that propaganda and fear can be extremely powerful in influencing the behavior of the public. This has the opportunity to result in tragedy, but it would be easily controlled by calming the media. Of course, the alien invasion should be handled with heavy precaution, and officials should be mindful as they consider the full magnitude of possibilities when it comes to interactions with unknown life
H.G Wells and Ray Bradbury both portray a world under attack by aliens, as stated previously. However while the two authors both depict alien invasions, each author portrays the reactions of these characters in contrasting ways. While Wells shows that the characters weren’t frantic, in fact they were prepared for the invasion, Bradbury’s characters were fearful and were ‘playing
The alien's have not meddled with the destruction of a civilization in millions of years, but they found they could not allow the complex human being to become extinct. However, because humans are intelligent to a fault without actively questioning authority and have a tendency to be
One of the main themes the author conveys is fear. In the teleplay, neighbors are afraid of each other because they don’t know who the aliens are and what they will do next. An example of fear is when Charlie shoots Pete Van Horn. Pete was walking back to Maple Street, and Charlie shot him, thinking Pete was the alien. “But.. I didn’t know he was… He comes walkin’ out of the darkness. How am I supposed to know he wasn’t a monster
Towards the end of the movie, it is unveiled that some of the humans on earth have joined the aliens in a “human power elite” in what one human who collaborated with the aliens called a “business move.” These humans have used their careers and human life interactions to help deliver the aliens’ messages in return for money and protection. They have gone against their own species and capitalized on the aliens takeover. This can be deemed to be parallel to the capitalism and the corrupt manipulation prevalent in our democracy and how they can together destroy the American
To start, A meteor comes down and no sound was heard from the crash, if a meteor came down there would be some noise not just a streak of light. Charlie blasts Pete with a shotgun because he thought he was an alien, first people don’t go shooting unless he know what it is first, second no man would believe that aliens are invading from a teenager. Aliens are talking on their spaceship, Aliens don’t exist so they would not try and attack us.
There are several different meanings to the word “alien.” An alien could be a resident born or belonging to a different country, a foreigner, a person who has been excluded from something, or a creature from outer space (extraterrestrial). For this argument, a creature from outer space would be the appropriate definition. Many believe extraterrestrials do exist. Many even claim to have seen aircrafts belonging to these extraterrestrials. There have been thousands of “sightings” of unidentified flying objects in which many believe do not look like or belong to anything Earthly. A lot of these sightings have not and can not be explained. Major governments around the globe will not come out and tell the public
Even though they are large and totally encased in metallic shells like giant, nine foot tall, upright sea turtles, the aliens are few and (with a little help from George's dreams) are soon accepted as harmless. They generally become small time merchants who set up little shops in out of the
Alien abduction stories have always held a strong interest among people all over the world, captivating our attention and curiosity as they propose yet another unsolved mystery of gigantic proportions and unthinkable consequences for humanity to contemplate. More so in modern times, and especially in the western world, where the media is a more significant part of culture, many science fiction novelists and screen writers brought out the issue to the public in the form of entertainment. This, due its widespread appeal, gave these stories a certain level of credulity among the masses, and sparked curiosity for closer investigation.
Also, another thing WHY in the world would someone shoot a guy??? Shouldn't you ask their name first??! If you think their aliens then at least try and reason with them. The reason I think this part
The topic of aliens is often a very controversial one to talk about. The aliens in THE FOURTH KIND represent many fears that we have has as humans such as the fear of feeling inferior. That is why many people don’t like to acknowledge that there could possibly be other intellectual species outside of earth, due to the fear of them feeling inferior to a more advanced life form. If aliens are anything like the human species then we should all be afraid, due to the fact that the human race killed most of the animal species and even kidnapped and enslaved other humans. If extraterrestrials ever came to our planet, their technology and intellect would be far more advanced than ours and that could possibly hurt humanity because they could have the power and technology to enslave us. They also represent how people would be willing to do wicked things like using science and technology for malevolent purposes. The aliens abuse of power in the film reflect how humans could possibly turn out if we obtained their technology. Humans could learn to one-day build rockets and spacecraft’s that can travel to other planets and their main goal would be to use these technologies to benefit ourselves. If we had the power to overtake another planet and inhabit it, we would not hesitate to do so and we are willing to do the unthinkable for power and advancement. Aliens also represent the fear of there being no god or religion because most religious people oppose science and credit god for
Recently some students of an English class watched a short film called Arrival, directed by Denise Villeneuve. One of the main stars of the film was Dr. Louise Banks, the hetapods that are actually called aliens. Arrival is about how these aliens called hetapods come down and land one of the 12 spacecraft’s on Earth. In the film they create world chaos to the point where the military is involved and the military needs Dr. Louise to help answer the citizens questions? “ Why are the hetapods here?” Due to them being aliens Dr. Louise job assigned by the military is to use her career skills as a language expert to understand these hetapods language and to communicate with them. Eventually she can communicate with the hetapods, considering reality how likely do you believe it is to have aliens or other intelligent beings would be on Earth? Thinking about their language, habitat lifestyle and how would the world react to them being here. How would we contact them? Could the world afford to use money for scientific tools and resources attempting to find and listen for space aliens?
Released at the peak of the Cold War, this film represents the zeitgeist of the time that demanded international peace and cooperation. Just in the first ten minutes of the movie, director Robert Wise has switched the perceived notions of evil extraterrestrials and causes humans to identify with the aliens. In Mike Alford’s Heroes and Villains, he writes “freedom is, as we have said, one of our most cherished ideals, yet it is generally recognized that for a society to function properly certain freedoms have to be sacrificed for the sake of greater good” (Alford 105). Applied to The Day the Earth Stood Still, humans must give up their differences and put down their weapons in order to save themselves and everyone they love. Klaatu’s attempt at diplomacy with Earth was a heroic action for the greater good of the universe.
Aliens as a pseudoscience at times can be somewhat controversial because the belief in aliens is mainly interpreted in two ways. One belief is the idea that aliens exist somewhere in the universe but have not necessarily visited earth. The second main interpretation is the belief that aliens visited earth before and/or currently visiting earth in UFO’s. This belief is more pseudoscientific than the first because, the odds of the mere existence of aliens is a matter of probability. But, the second is more difficult to explain and often relies on some pseudoscientific explanations, reasoning errors, and visual illusions. The belief in UFO and aliens visiting earth is a lot more common than most people realize as Rice ( 2003) points out in his study. In a survey of about 1,000 people in the U.S, 35% of people stated they believed extraterrestrials have visited Earth at some point in the past while, 40% did not
What would happen if alien life forms landed on earth? How would we communicate and cooperate with them? If there was a conflict, how would we fix it? The movie Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve attempts to answer these questions.
Aliens and life beyond earth has been a mystery for a long time. Many people and scientist have been looking for life outside of Earth, or just floating in the sky trying to get video of it. For all of human history we have been looking for extraterrestrial life, and these are the major events of finding, debunking, and moving forward to life on earth
