The museums I chose were the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, National Museum of Art of Romania, and National Art Museum of China. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is located in Buffalo, New York and focuses on contemporary and modern art. In addition to having a large gallery of art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery also has over fourteen programs designed to education the public in the culture of art and each program may be different but incorporates all age groups. The National Museum of Art of Romania is located in Calea Victoriei, Romania (former royal palace revolution square and displays Romanian, European, and Oriental art, but focuses heavily on Romanian medieval and modern art. Furthermore, it also provides their website in multiple languages …show more content…
Lastly it has become well known for its foundation of the Public Education Department, which in turn, gives multiple opportunities for internships and volunteer work with the museum. If I were to select one of the three Art Museums to visit, I would be inclined to visit the National Museum of Art of Romania. The reason being, I would love to walk the halls of the museum taking in all the beauty of the various paintings, sculptures, and relics of the past. During my visit, I would like to witness in person the beauty of the Cranach-Venus and Cupid painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder. In the Cranach-Venus and Cupid the painter used Line and Space for Elements of Art and Proportion and Unity for the Principles of Design. As for the Composition, it was an informal balance with the use of contrapposto which is an asymmetrical arrangement of the human figure. As you see within the painting of Venus the lines for her arms contrast brilliantly with hips and legs. I strongly believe this composition takes hold for the vast shape of her body and emphasis on her as the protagonist of the oil painting. The use of the line helps bring a realistic view of Venus
As Edgar Degas once said, “ Art is not what you see, but what others make you see”. The St. Louis Art Museum is a place for artist to display their art and give spectators the option to see art from a new perspective. This was the case for me. As we walked up to the beautifully structured building that stood so tall and wide, my expectations were extremely high. At first glance I notice the bronze statue of King Louis IX of France riding high on his horse. From this statue alone, my expectations of the art museum grew stronger. I have never been to an art museum before, so I wasn’t sure of what to expect. My first expectation was to see huge detailed sculptures right as I walked through the door. That expectation didn’t come true.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond at a glance is a modern metropolitan building that displays a vibrant exhibition of Byzantine art found in the Medieval and Byzantine wing. They are grouped together because they share a progression of time occurring in the heart of Europe roughly from the 1300s until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The exhibit begins with displays of medieval art of Western Europe. It further progresses to Byzantine art arranged in broad categories ranging from pre-Christian art, liturgical material, secular material and a display of coptic textiles. Although small scale, a few art pieces prominently featuring the human figure stood out in particular.
The Cleveland Art Museum is a prominent art gallery that is found Cleveland, Ohio. This museum from the states carries a large array of artwork (paintings, drawings, photographs, sketches, sculptures, etc). Though, these works of art do not focus primarily on one time period. This particular museum holds creations that stem all the way back to Ancient Egypt. From this particular art gallery (that can also be found online), a work of art from this gallery will be looked at. However, there will be a certain specification. The reason behind this specification is based around the book Tender Is The Night. Being one of Scott Fitzgerald’s outstanding books, this novel was set in the early 1930’s. Hence, I will be focusing on a painting made/done in the early 1930’s.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in Richmond, Virginia and was built on March 27, 1934. The Virginia Fine Arts Museum is one of the top art museums in the United States. They have a vast collection of exhibits including American, African, East Asian, Ancient, 21st century and many more. My favorite exhibit is The McGlothlin Collection of American Art. This exhibit caught my eye as soon as I walked in the door. There were many astonishing paintings that had a lot of emotion, but one stood out from all the others. The artist, Beauford Delaney, painted Marian Anderson.
Perhaps illness so influenced the artistic style of Van Gogh, but the picture turned out completely different to all that the artist wrote so far. This is not a Van Gogh, who was known. In the canvas, there is tension, anxiety, dense colors and warm shades of olive-mustard. On the contrary, here there is some kind of lightness, airiness, and transparent weightlessness. On the manner of execution, the pattern resembles Japanese prints: iris field full of peace, a lightness, and transparency. "Irises" are simple and unique, they are striking in their serenity and the ability to remove the internal stress of everyone who saw at least reproduction. Painting simply breathes watercolor, translucency and make to look at it more than one hour.
The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) holds many works of art from all types of cultures from around the world. The Torso of an Emperor in the Guise of Jupiter from Roman culture and the Torso of Aphrodite from Greek culture, are but two of them. It is unknown who the artist was for either of them, but the work has lived on for centuries. During the time period the gods were known for their perfection- like body and extraordinary looks. Since the sculptures highlight only the torso of the body it represents that only image matters and the brain does not.
The Carnegie Museum of Art was a museum created to focus on the art of tomorrow rather than already popular art and artists of today. A necessary part for that dream of Andrew Carnegie to become a reality is having a place to house these art pieces. While of course he could have just found an empty warehouse and placed all the art there that would neither have given the pieces of art justice nor would anyone want there personal collection to be placed on display there. Instead, in order to have a successful art museum you have to house the art in a place that does it justice. Museums heavily rely on their architecture to accurately portray and supplement the showpieces within the museum. Carnegie’s art museum
Throughout history people can see many of the developments and differences among cultures, through the artworks that were produced. This essay will carefully analyze, evaluate, and compare four distinct works, from different time periods and cultures. The works to be compared are: The Woman from Willendorf, The Bust of Nefertiti, Figure of A Woman, and Young Flavian Woman. Throughout this paper the style and function of each individual work will be explored, along with the cultural ideas presented in each piece.
At 111th Street and 49th Avenue in Flushing, Queens, NY houses a grand architecture of knowledge and wisdom; The Queens Museum. According to the Museum's website, the building architected and renovated by Daniel Chait and was used for the 1964 World's Fair as the New York City Pavilion. Eight years later minor alterations were made to the north side of the New York City building and was converted into the Queens Center for Art and Culture, which was later called the Queens Museum of Art. The magnificent beautiful building, in 1972, it opened to serve as a cultural center for the borough of Queens. The building then had further renovation, in 1994 by architect Rafael Viñoly reconfiguring the structure into galleries, classrooms, and offices.
The initial purpose of the Coleman museum was to provide a welcoming setting to appreciate the art in it's cultural and historical benefits as well as it's successive generations of Fannel County visitors and citizens. By spanning both history and art combined, the Coleman museum offers a unique perspective on both ends. A person and/or visitors can truly appreciate the museum's collection of art and history, especially if they're open to a historical literate challenge.
On November 7, 1883, an exhibition organized by “May Wright Sewell, her husband Theodore, and a small group of art-minded citizens” (History, 2017) began what would one day become the establishment now known as the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Since that first exhibition, the IMA has gone through several identity changes. They were first named, the Art Association of Indianapolis. Their next identity was as the John Herron Art Institute, which opened a whole new chapter, as they became “a campus featuring both a museum and an art school.” (History, 2017) Today, the IMA is one of the largest encyclopedic art museums in the nation. The IMA has had various leadership and staff over the years that have lent to how the museum operates today.
This influence and style continued at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth Texas. Louis Kahn is a modern architect that designed the Kimbell Art Museum. Kahn emerged from the Beaux-Arts movement but became one of the foremost American Modernist architects of the 1950’s and 60’s (Kimball, 1990). Kahn created a building for the Kimbell Art Museum that also complimented the art and did not distract the viewer (Kimball, 1990). He was commissioned to design the Kimbell Art Museum from 1966-1972). “Kahn’s museums are individual to the point of idiosyncrasy, yet they remain transparent to the works of the art they house (Kimball, 1990).” The Yale University Art Gallery, designed by Kahn, has an intimate studio feel as employed at the Museum of Modern Art (Binns, 2004 p. 17). Kahn also utilized similar materials that Goodwin and Stone incorporated. The Yale University Art Gallery is made of large pieces of glass and steel (Binns, 2004, p. 17). Many of the materials used at Kahn’s three museums are glass, steel, concrete, and brick (Eliasoph, 2009, p. 317). During the 2005 remodeling, the team attempts at restoring much of Kahn’s original design elements at it considers it a very important part of architectural history (Binns, 2004, p. 17).
Aside from the Brooklyn Museum, the only museum I had been to in the last four years would be the Met Breuer. As I was instructed to visit the Diane Arbus exhibit at the Met Breuer, I imagined the same type of scenery any museum would look like; high ceiling, large frames, and a collection of detailed and colorful work. It occurred to my surprise when instead I saw an identical collection of same sized frames, of just people, in what seemed to be black and white. As I took a deeper glance, I noticed almost none of the people photographed were smiling. It appeared that they were candid photos, yet they all looked directly at the camera. Arbus’ photos were drawn to unusual public places and scenery in black and white with some surreal contrast portraits. I noticed the raw images of peculiar people often brought focus on those who may be the outliers of their society; transgender, dwarfs, nudists, circus clowns, and even children. There were various particular themes that struck a chord with me, however, among the many images I came across during my search, I found Arbus’ portraits on transgender people provoke the most emotion and intrigue. The wide variety of each portrait as well as the ways she chose to portray them told a story of both lives and culture within her lifetime. Being particularly interested on transgender people, I was captivated with the complexities of her work and the way that she transcended so many boundaries which constantly had me question the theme she
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens. It opened on February 20, 1872 and was originally located at 681 on Fifth Avenue. Also known as “The Met”, the museum is located on the eastern edge of Central Park in New York City. It has a permanent collection containing more than two million works of art. The main building of the Met is one of the world’s largest art galleries. The museum permanent collection includes art from
Before visiting the Mint Museum in Downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, I had never been to a true art museum before. This particular art museum had many sculptures, ceramics, and paintings from various artists. The work of the artists dated back as far as the Mayans and extended through artists from current culture. All of the art was unique, allowing me to visually obtain a more thorough understanding of many different cultures. It was quite difficult for me to choose a piece of art that I wanted to talk about because there were so many intriguing pieces, however, one of the items that really grabbed my attention was a portrait of Queen Charlotte.
