The Air Force would be an organization that I have working in and one that I am familiar with. As an airplane mechanic there has to be all of the elements said in Jaffee’s table from social structure, participants, goals, technology, and an environment where individuals can work in. To start off with social structure there is always a chain of command or in some cases depends on the rank an individual may have. As for me my rank is staff sergeant, so I oversee those who work in my shop, but it could be different depending on where my higher ups place me. As a staff sergeant in my shop I help and teach the new Airmen on their duties. There are so many various jobs or duties that must be done to accomplish their goal. At times there will be challenges like at any other place, but individuals just need to know how to adapt to change. For example, deployment, individuals will be told how much time they may be away from their families, but there may be times when it could be longer than expected creating disillusionment and disappointment. This disillusionment and disappointment falls under the management theory. The individual will now see that it will not be up to them when they leave, it will be up to everyone in their unit regarding if the mission has been completed within the time frame. I mean this would not work if there was not an authoritative figure or if everyone wanted to be that one powerful person. Going back to an Air Force example even we have to follow our chain of command. Those individuals who are E-1 to E-3 do not want to be stuck on those ranks forever and want to continue getting more stripes. The Air Force have somewhat like a mentor to keep persuading individuals to see, understand, and imagine their maximum potential to get to where they want to be. Decision -making is a big deal in the Air Force, so those individuals who have the authoritative power know what they are about to do. When an individual is being promoted this person has to re-adapt to the new workload and even new assignments. A promotion can mean a variety of different new things because if this individual has a higher rank than one of his friends he has to put that new stance of I have somewhat more authority than you; it is just one more of those adjustment that that individual has to do. There are a lot of reasons for the rank structure and the chain of command. Every reason that I am going to explain in this essay is very important. I am going to separate them into two paragraphs. The first paragraph will be about the importance of the rank structure and why the rank structure is in place. The second paragraph will be about the importance of the chain of command and why the chain of command is set into place.
When we talk about someone being in a position of authority we usually mean that they hold a certain rank or status within society or within an organisation such as the public services. There are several ways in which a person could find himself or herself in a position of authority. For example, a priest has the authority of the church while a mother or father has parental authority over children. In the uniformed public services, positions of authority come with promotion. An officer may be promoted because of certain achievements and special attributes, such as experience in the service, good character, knowledge of the job, dedication, self-discipline and the respect of one’s colleagues. If you join the uniformed public services and are placed in a position of authority, you may lawfully command team members, who recognise your authority and their duty to obey those legitimate commands. When authority is legitimate, there is no need to influence or use power. Indeed, if a senior officer were unable to gain the respect of a team member by command alone, then there would be no recognisable authority.
Chapter six, I read the title and got excited, What is Management and When Are You Managing? Yes, now we are getting somewhere! While I have never served in the United States Army, I have many family and friends who have served. Based on conversations that I have had with them the job dissatisfaction is drastically high as you have said. It is much the same in the realm of Law Enforcement, if they do not trust those above them; the Officers rarely will put their selves out there. I completely agree with your assessment that the job attitudes and personalities of the Soldiers is the prominent reason for the low job satisfaction. Within my organisation there are is a hierarchy of staff. With the organisation being a school the person to lead the school would the head teacher. Even though it is the head teacher that encourages all staff and students at the school, the board of governors would ensure that the school strive to achieve the goals and objectives that are set. The person next in authority would be the assistant head teacher. Even though the position of the assistant head teacher would be below in seniority it would be fair to say that these two positions would jointly make decisions within my organisation.

It's important for the military to keep this rigid structure and chain of command because of the high rate of turnover. When I start work at a new duty station I am filling the job of someone who just left and someone else is filling the position that I just vacated and so forth and so on. Having the rigid rules and structure makes operating procedures very clear and precise for new employees who need to get up to speed quickly. This is important for me because, even though my specialty is air traffic control, not all of the same operating procedures apply at each duty station. Robbins and Judge explain this by stating how the bureaucracy design helps the middle management and lower level managers in that the rules and regulations replace the need for managerial discretion.
Several of the uniformed public services and also a lot of other organisations counting several of business, use Command and Control systems, so that their structural can work effectively, because each and every individual has a role and duty upon them. Other than the fact that they are not allowed to make decisions, most of the decisions made and released to them do not seem to enhance and steer forward the intended mission. The current communication and decision making process in the unit is throwing the whole unit into confusion. He also argues as a result; the staff sections are forced to work longer hours than normal, which is against the protocols of the unit, and also, the assumption that they are only supposed to be busier, while in foreign missions.
The military is an organization that is structured through a hierarchical system. Which is why the egalitarian culture would not be effective. There is order in the military and their structure is heavily reliant on the hierarchical culture. An egalitarian culture is chaos compared to the structure of the military. In the military there are ranks that the personnel earn, and with each rank there ensues more responsibility.
I come from a system where leadership development never ceases. As soon as we join the Army we are tasked out with responsibility. A new Soldier will at one point be responsible for the actions of the troops and carrying out the directive of the Drill Sergeant. From that point on a Soldier who is competent will receive more responsibility and subordinates.
