Wisdom is the understanding of the concealed truths of the world and is the knowledge surrounding the human condition. It is when these truths and knowledge of humanity are organized in text, when the genre of wisdom and content combine, that Wisdom literature is formed. The aim of Wisdom literature is to search for propriety, the order of things in time and place (Narendorf). The Book of Job is an example of this aim as Job reveals alternative insight into the consequences of human behavior. Likewise, Aias and Odysseus, in Sophocles’ Aias, also offer a contradiction of conventional wisdom in regards to human relationships. Aias is now their enemy, so therefore, in accordance with the standards of society, they must not help him. However, it is Odysseus, the aim of Aias’ hatred, that allows Aias’ brother Teukros to bury Aias and honor “the greatest of all who came to Troy, second only to Achilles” (1511-3). Odysseus then concludes, “to strike at a brave man when he is dead can never be just, no matter how much you hate him… Now let me say to Teukros that as much as I was his enemy before, I will be his friend from this day on” (1515-9, 1562-5). Aias, who first says that one can change from a friend to an enemy or an enemy to a friend, now profits from this alternative wisdom. For example, amidst the chaos in Syria, countries including Russia, the United States and France are bombing the ISIS terrorist group. With the U.S. seeking to aid the Syrian rebels and Russia seeking to aid Bashar Al-Assad’s regime, both countries exemplify the conventional wisdom of harming one’s enemies and helping one’s friends. However, members of ISIS believe that the righteous, the Sunni-Muslims, will be rewarded for their loyalty to the group, by membership and by God, while the wicked, those who are not Sunni-Muslim, should suffer, by being terrorized on earth and punished in the after-life. Therefore, the alternative wisdoms of Odysseus and Job also critique the conventional wisdom still existing today. Both contradict popular beliefs of humans by offering their own compelling wisdom.
