Odysseus: A Hero
In Homer's The Odyssey, Odysseus shows time and again his heroic characteristics such as, courage, leadership, and cleverness that prove him and others to be a hero, even today. Odysseus’s goal is to return home to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War, but is forced to overcome obstacles set throughout his journey designed to make him fail. Odysseus uses his heroic traits to conquer these obstacles. The same traits that make Odysseus a hero are also present in many of the people who are labeled as heroes today. For example, Martin Luther King Jr., an undeniable hero, is courageous, a leader, and clever. Odysseus’s courage helps him to stay determined while he propels himself through bumps in his journeys on his way home.

An example of Odysseus’s cleverness in The Odyssey occurs when the crew and Odysseus are trapped in the cave with Polyphemus. Polyphemus asks Odysseus what his name is and Odysseus tells him, “Nobody-that's my name” (12.410). This is clever of Odysseus because when he stabs him in the eye, Polyphemus screams that nobody is killing him and the other cyclops don’t come to help. Odysseus also puts his cleverness on display when he tells the crew only he was to hear the sirens. He tells the crew, “I alone was to hear the voices” (12.174) even though Circe never singled him out. By deceiving the crew, Odysseus avoids potential uproars from the members of his crew about wanting to hear the sirens as well. The cleverness is Odysseus’s personality is again shown in Ithaca when he is disguised as an old man to find out who is loyal to him. Odysseus’s body was covered, “top to toe with the wrinkled hide of an old man” (P. 300, L. 494-495). By doing this Odysseus can tell which members of his staff are loyal or disloyal to him without much effort. The traits that make Odysseus a hero can also be found in many of the people we believe are heroes
Is Odysseus, the main character of Homer’s The Odyssey, really an epic hero? An epic hero embodies several heroic traits such as; having superior or super-human strength; being intellectual and courageous; and being a strong and responsible leader. An epic hero struggles and is overwhelmed with difficulties. An epic hero is on a quest of self discovery, war or some sort of goal. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is on a quest to return home to Ithaca after ten years of war in Troy. Odysseus, during his quest, is forced to venture through a merciless Cyclops, angered Gods, deeply obstinate Goddesses, the underworld, and determined suitors that are after his wife Penelope. Odysseus surmounts
A man once said, “Heroism is endurance for one moment more.” -George F. Kennan. This quote relates to The Odyssey and how Odysseus is a good example of a hero because he faces multiple challenges, seemingly one right after another. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus is a hero who is shown to exhibit astonishing qualities like superior strength, intelligence, and spiritual assistance from the gods compared to other men, even with the flaws he faces. Odysseus is a hero as he clearly shows his physical might throughout the book.
Spider-Man is your average modern day hero, he is a citizen who was bitten by an unusual and peculiar spider which gave him powers and abilities such as being able to shoot webs out of his hands and climb walls without the need of any equipment. And Odysseus is a Greek hero who was strong, heavily favored by the gods, and could take down any and all challenges he´d ever have to face. And if you ever compared the two you would see that both characters are extremely different. Why you would see this is because we know that Spider-Man is a modern day hero, but can we consider Odysseus as one. My answer to this would be NO. Society today would not consider Odysseus as a modern day hero because of many reasons. One would be that he doesn´t show
Odysseus is a hero that uses modern day standards. Odysseus has done many things on his trip going to and from Ithaca. He has traveled oceans and fought in a war and fought his way back home. He was away for 20 years from his family in Ithaca. Odysseus he is known by many people for being a hero.
This shows that Odysseus was clever because he told the Cyclops that his name was “Nohbdy” so that when Odysseus and his men stabbed him in the eye and his Cyclops’s friend came to ask ‘who has tricked you?’ the Cyclops would answer ‘Nohbdy did it.’ This shows how Odysseus was a hero because without his cleverness they probably would have been stuck in the cave forever. Another way Odysseus showed his cleverness is when he gave up six of his men to the Scylla instead of going into the Charybdis and risking the lives of his whole crew. “Then Scylla made her strike, whisking six of my best men from the ship.
However, even when Odysseus shows unlike character traits of a hero, this is not reasonable because Odysseus is a hero who does everything in the last 20 years to make it back home while facing many problems on his journey. Those problems Odysseus faces as he takes charge and solves them, which highlights how good of a leader he
Odysseus: The Hero of all Time Being a hero isn’t just about the fame and glory. It is about the characteristics of the person and how they decide to use them. This epic poem, The Odyssey, written by Homer, has many examples that show off the heroic traits of a character named Odysseus. Two heroic traits that Odysseus acquires are his intelligence and his self confidence. During his journey, the brave Odysseus went through many obstacles that forced his journey to a standstill, but his intelligence and self-confidence helped him survive and return home to Ithaca.
Odysseus exemplifies being a hero through his acts of leadership, strategic, and intelligence on his journey back home to Ithica. Throughout the journey, Odysseus and his men encounter multiple obstacles and many near-death experiences, but thanks to Odysseus, his men escape from them. What is a value? A value is a person’s principles or standards of behaviour; ones judgment of what is important in life. An epic hero is a larger-than life main character who embodies values of his society. In The Odyssey, Odysseus uses his Greek values, traits, and smarts to overcome his battles. These values/traits are vengeance, Family, and Strength.
Heroes are often thought of as great figures that conquer evil, kill the monster, and save the day. Odysseus is often referred to as a hero. He is a strong individual striving to complete his goal, return to his wife and son and remove suitors that have taken his home. Although he is seen as a hero by definition and he appears to be one as well there are decisions he made that may not be truly heroic. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus decisions to value his crew's life, and completing and being victorious through hard challenges makes him an epic hero. Odysseus saving his crew and competing his goal makes him a hero.
The Homeric epic, the Odyssey, is set in the peaceful years following the Trojan War, and concerns the returning heroes on their journeys home, in particular Odysseus of Ithaca. Odysseus is an epic hero; he displays courage, superior strength, and leadership, all qualities that people admire. While displaying these archetypal heroic traits he also displays his weaknesses as a man, particularly his excessive pride, which actually make him easy to relate to. So by demonstrating his strengths, and overcoming his weaknesses he becomes an epic hero, not only in Homer 's time but in the 21st century as well. Yet these archetypal heroic qualities are not his only heroic qualities, in order to win his battles
Many think being a hero is having super powers, but on the contrary it's more than that. A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. A hero like this is not just found in modern society today, but in mythology as well. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus earns the title of a true hero by conveying many qualities such as: determination, courage and leadership.
Kings, knights, battles. These are things that a person thinks of when it comes to heroes. Odysseus is not only a king that goes through a lot, but he also has so many more features to his personality. Each trait develops over the course of the story and by the end of the book, Odysseus is a hero. Courage is the first trait someone might notice, because he is willing to take risks and give up everything, even his life. Intelligence is present in almost everything Odysseus does. Lastly, leadership is a trait that Odysseus has had since the very beginning of the Trojan War. Many will think that Odysseus is cocky and self-centered, but throughout The Odyssey, Homer displays Odysseus as a heroic character with many complex traits. Courage is a
In Homer’s, The Odyssey, I believe that Odysseus is a true modern hero. During his long and perilous journey home Odysseus shows many heroic qualities that help save his men from many dangerous situations. He first shows his Valiant behavior during the war in Troy, he cares about his crew and survives the war. He also deeply cares about the welfare of his men on their return trip to Ithaka. Odysseus is a hero because he is a courageous leader, a quick thinker and a modest man.
When you think of a hero do you think of someone that can fly or that can lift a bus full of people? That is not the answer to all cases of heros. Some heros are just normal people that go throughout their day working or cooking. Other heroes are written in Greek Mythology, or even more specific, the Odyssey. Odysseus is the main character in the Odyssey, and he is labeled as a “hero”. But is that true? Would a hero tie his men to the mass of a ship just because they did not follow the certain task they were given? I would think a hero would give graciousness to any and all of his men. I believe that this act that Odysseus put forth was a minor act of heroicness. This deed was not an act of all things heroic.
