African Music
When trying to compare and contrast the music-culture and society of the Mbuti and that of the Venda, it becomes difficult to comment on sound when we haven't heard any Venda music. It's easy to recognize that for the Mbuti the music embodies the heart of the forest, and for the Venda the relation to nature is the act of a mother giving birth. Thinking about concept and behavior this makes the music performed by the two cultures separate and distinguishable. This is where culture and environment become important factors. How noticeable is this when listening to the music of both peoples? When given the opportunity to listen, without a trained ear, it would be difficult to find differences in the sound of the music.

In both societies there is a visible comparison between the separation males and females when performing ‘rights of passage.' In both cultures we see a universal participation in music as a common thread to survival, and an individuality is kept within the music as it's being performed. The Venda believes that all human beings have the capacity to be musical. Blacking solidifies this thought when stating that, "The Venda may not consider the possibility of unmusical human beings, but they do recognize that some people perform better than others." The same general concept may hold true with the Mbuti, the concept that we are all somehow children of the forest. The relationship that the Mbuti has with the outside villages for provisions and the treatment they receive in these villages can be viewed as a distinction. How close does the Venda come to resembling the village groups sited in Turnbulls research? Is this where most of the distinctions can be made?
The Mbuti is primarily a forest dwelling group, relying on the forest for most of their subsistence. The Mbuti uses the molimo as their main instrument, when an elder dies, ceremonies take place using this instrument by the men. The Venda is more complex socially, and they use more instruments. Even the attitude the Mbuti has toward daily life and music seems much more relaxed and simple. Are there the same circular flow or looping patterns in the music of both cultures? Both of these cultures had many differences but they also had many similarities such as their close ties of kinship to Araks in the Indian’s case or villages for the !Kung culture. They also practiced arranged marriages though for the !Kung the first marriage is usually the only one arranged since the bride is so young. They both had symbolic rituals, though the Indian’s was more elaborate and intense. All in all, both cultures were distinct as one way of life and they had similarities showing that humans in other parts of the world aren’t so different after all whether they be in the African Continent or in the more modernized Indian

American Gospel music is founded in the African American church. It has a deep culture in America. It is used as an outlet for people who have been oppressed, beaten down, and persecuted. Gospel music acts as a source of inspiration for those who had all but given up. It speaks of the various trials and struggles they’ve undergone, and how they were able to overcome. Is also used as a form of praise and worship, giving thanks to the Lord. The term “gospel” means “the good news.” Gospel music is used to tell the good news of the salvation people have received from the Lord, rescuing them from all of the trials and struggles of the world. Gospel music has been influenced by genres such as jazz and blues. It is a combination of many different forms of music, producing a new and unique type of sound.
When comparing Native American music to that of other cultures it is obvious that their music is a lot less complex. It consists of a single melodic line and is almost totally
Native American music has many different musical styles. Within every Native American tribe there is a variety of musical styles and instruments. In response to the research that I have conducted, there are three main musical styles that are going to be my point of focus. The Sioux Grass Dance, the Zuni Lullaby, and the Iroquois Quiver Dance are the principal methods which contribute to Native American music.
In simple terms, the Diaspora as a concept, describes groups of people who currently live or reside outside the original homelands. We will approach the Diaspora from the lenses of migration; that the migration of people through out of the African continent has different points of origin, different patterns and results in different identity formations. Yet, all of these patterns of dispersion and germination/ assimilation represent formations of the Diaspora. My paper will focus on the complexities of the question of whether or not Africans in the Diaspora should return to Africa. This will be focused through the lenses of the different phases in the Diaspora.
On the other hand Carnatic music extensively employs the use of musical instruments such as Veena (a stringed instrument), Mridangam (a percussion instrument), Gottuvadyam, Mandolin, Violin, Flute, Jalatarangam.
Over the years, African American Music has developed as not only as cultural but also artistic phenomenon affecting the world. The music takes its own stand of being dominant as well of having a prevailing means of expression through the use of the lyrics. The lyrics of many songs tend to use a specific type of language in order to create that connection between the listeners. This certain style of language helps the listeners to think on a deeper level about the real meaning behind the lyrics.
“An introduction to Samoan music is an introduction to the Samoan people as a whole (Moyle, p1).” Music had a strong, complimentary presence in traditional Samoan life, and is still a powerful presence today. Although, now, the traditional means for Samoan music has evolved along with it. Music has been around for a very long time. Especially African Music. Throughout many centuries, African music has changed. Just like any music today, the beat, the style, and even the dances have always been different and changing in Africa. There are many forms of African music that we think we may know but we don’t. Traditional music for us might be any song we play during certain holidays or special gatherings and then continuing that throughout the years. Unlike in Africa, their form of traditional music is very different. African music back then when written, was associated with specific ethnic groups. An original artist, focused his style on items that were very creative. The main source they used to write a song was based on archeological items and other human nature things as well. They were very intrigued and used photographic paintings on items such as rocks, many books and other picture motions to get inspired. This is how any original artist got his or her idea and based its song on daily life items. (1. "African Music.")
With the variety of life throughout the world, there are different expectations for musical literacy. For instance, the style of Japanese music is very different from that of Cajun music, or Hispanic from West African. These variances give each culture a particular style of expression. Music literacy isn't even confined within cultures; it also produces a way for different cultures to learn from each other. For example, western rock musicians often incorporated traditional Indian music into their style during the 1960's, which broke boundaries between different approaches to literacy.
Music from all over the world presents a range of musical theories. Some of these are documented in writing whilst others are transmitted orally. Discuss and give examples with reference to both Western and non-Western music.
The music of India is one of the oldest unspoken musical traditions in the world. The basis of for Indian music is “sangeet.” Sangeet is a combination of three art forms: vocal music, instrumental music (Indian music). Indian music is base upon seven modes (scales). It is probably no coincidence that Greek music is also base upon seven modes. Furthermore, the Indian scales follow the same process of modulation (murchana) that was found in ancient Greek music. Since Greece is also Indo-European, this is another piece of evidence for the Indo-European connection (Dance and music of India).
The African culture is one of the influences of the various art forms that join groups or tribes together. These art forms include singing, dancing, and making music with instruments. Africa is divided into five different subcultures that are all in one shape or another. Each, however, has the capability to learn from their ancestors and continue to modernize their art forms as how society calls. One instrument that has made an impact on the African sub cultures is the mbira. The subcultures that the mbira has made the most impact on are the people of Shona of Zimbabwe, The Republic of the Congo, and (insert last culture here). This instrument has made an impact on each of these cultures through different ways, but the results are the same.
