The term Columbian exchange refers to a lot of different things. You had the exchange of diseases, food crops, ideas, animals, and plants. Between the old world and having the Americans follow Columbus in 1492 in the Caribbean. The Columbian exchange mainly benefited the people in Europe and its colonies when it made things kind of bad for the Native Americans. The Columbian exchange explains why the Indian nations went downhill and the European colonies did a lot after Columbus and the new world. The Columbian exchange also talks about how the European nations became the wealthiest and most powerful places in the world during that time. When dealing with the Columbian exchange, ecology became destiny. There were a lot of powerful environmental forces. You learn about the smallpox virus, about potatoes, and this pig. The political reasons for the Columbian exchange were dealing with gold and silver, even the animals. In America the Columbian exchange had issues because before conquest the American societies were being self-governed but then you the Europeans start to take control. The American society started to become dependent to Europe. Problems that took place with Europe during the Columbian exchange were when their populations started to grow very large. There was more food coming in like corn and potatoes. Families were able to have more kids the population doubled. They had slaves work to find gold and silver. Spain started to experience economic issues. During the Columbian exchange Africa population started to grow as well, well increase rapidly. It increased even though slavery was still going on.
