The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of food and crops, disease, ideas and people that involved Africa, the Americans and Europe. Explorers had found a new world which is commonly known as North America today. People wanted to travel to the New World to start fresh and be given freedom and rights that they did not receive in their present countries. It also helped discover new foods and revolutionary materials. The Columbian Exchange transformed the standards of living and had positive and negative effects on both the natives and the explorers. In many places such as Europe, people did not have religious freedom. The new world provided freedom of religion and place where you could spread your beliefs without being punished. People wanted to spread Christianity to the new world to help stop the spread of the Middle Eastern Muslims. People were living in a time with very little medicine to help fight disease that was responsible for the death of many people. Before people from around the world began settling in the New World, disease and sickness was under control. The Native Americans were immune to common sickness that was commonly present since they were born. Being immune to a sickness means your body is already resistant to the infection and has the proper needs to fight the infection. When settlers came from Europe, they were carriers of different diseases and that they are immune to. When they came in contact with the Native Americans, they spread diseases like smallpox, measles, chicken pox, malaria, yellow fever, and influenza. These are strong diseases that the Native Americans were not immune to. Ninety five percent of the Native Americans in North America were killed by these diseases brought over from the Old
