The focal point of education has always and will always be centered on students. The majority of an educators career is spent developing curriculum and learning new strategies and methods to help make students more efficient academically. Throughout the career of an educator the thoughts of evolving their own way of learning can become an afterthought. It is important that educators are involved in professional developments that pertain to the andragogy of adult learning and how the educator can apple better understand themselves and how they best learn and become efficient. This mentality can formulate through expectations from administrators, from conversations with other educators, or simply through the level of expectation that are being placed on educators from a state and federal level. As an individual who looks to create and deliver a professional development for colleagues or other educators one must understand how adults learn and decide on how to best reach each individual and place them in a position of learning something new and bettering themselves. Adults and children learn in a very similar manner, but the difference between the two is there self-concept of relying on oneself as an adult compared to learning through and from others as a child (Knowles, 1980). Concepts such as preferred learning style and relationships are a crucial factor for both adults and children, and this claim lays true to the adult learning theory of how adult learners retain and present information in most only how they develop and build on relationships with students and colleagues. Rather than denigrating the past as irrelevant, it highlights it as essential (Graham, 2017). When working with a wide variety of cultures, ethnicities, and genders a perception for each can culminate into misunderstandings and biases that lead to ineffectiveness on the job and in the classroom. Take for example, a young and inexperienced classroom teacher that is hired into a low performing school, this teacher may struggle with classroom management or gaining the trust of students. This teacher may perceive the students as uneducated, not willing to learn, and may develop a feeling that they cannot instruct these types of students, while a teacher that has more experience and confidence in themselves is able to effectively and efficiently instruct the same types of students. In this example experience and self-concept are a major factor that creates a bias for a teacher. The theory of adult learning is the assumptions about how adults learn. Emphasizes the value of the process of learning in adults ("Adult Learning Theory," 2007). Malcom Knowles and American practitioner and theorist of adult education defined is as an art and science of helping adults learn ("Adult Learning Theory," 2007). Knowles also defined six adult learning principles as adults are internally motivated and self-directed, adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiences and are goal orientated. The Adult Learning Theory is based on understanding how adults learn and how they respond to the program in general. Researchers have found three key methods on how adults learn: experiential learning, transformational learning, and non-Western and Indigenous ways of knowing and learning (CITE). In Experiential Learning, adults learn through the experiences they have lived. Transformational Learning, on the other hand, is a “process in which adult learners question their own lives and how they interact with the world in which they live in” (CITE). Thus meaning that adults learn through situations that challenge their own thoughts about something and makes them reevaluate their original thought process. When adults participate in a positive learning experience that follows the six assumptions of andragogy presented in this paper, they are more likely to retain what they have learned and apply it in their work environment.

The adult learning theory Also known as andragogy is the concept of Adult learning as a science in the field of education. Created by Malcolm Knowles , the theory is comprised of four different concepts. The world of adult learning was changed by Knowles’ (1973) when he identified four assumptions about andragogy, meaning “the art and science of helping adults learn” (Knowles, 1970, p. 42). These assumptions are: self-concept; experience; readiness; and orientation. Knowles later added two more assumptions; the critical need to know, and motivation (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2015; Knowles, 1980). Knowles’ second assumption, experience, plays a significant role for individuals to create, retain and transfer knowledge based upon prior knowledge and skill, (Argote, McEvily & Reagans, 2003, p. 575). Are people too stubborn and independent to learn once they become adults? The Adult Learning Theory focuses on the difference between how adults learn and how children learn. There are three main central ideas that support the Adult Learning Theory. These ideas or theories are known as andragogy, self-directed learning, and transformational learning. Andragogy is the teaching of adults, self-directed learning is the individual controlling their learning, and transformational learning is the individual learning from life experiences.

Adult learners use their life experiences and knowledge to make connections which allows adults to have a better understanding of a specific concept. " Adults have lived longer, seen and done more, have the tendency to link their past experiences to anything new and validate new concepts based on prior learning" (Pappas, 2013). As a teacher, I am constantly asking my students to make connections so they can relate to what they are reading or learning about in class. This is a skill. Adult learners have had the time to develop this skill and master it. This is yet another concept children must learn so they can use it in their adult life to effectively learn.

The six principals of adult learning are the )learner needs to know( 2) self-concept of the learner (3)prior experience of the learner( 4) readiness to learn(,5) orientation to learning and(6) motivation to learn .Learning is an active exercise, healthcare professionals prefer to learn independently and self-directed.
