Introduction
This book report will discuss addiction and the effects of alcohol on the brain according to Dr. Harold Urschel’s Science Based Alcoholism and Addiction Recovery Program as described in his book, “Healing the Addicted Brain”.
Discussion
The primary theme of this book is the Revolutionary Science Based Alcoholism and Addiction Recovery Program, its overwhelming and substantiated effect on the process and success of recovery based on the evidence that describes how alcohol and other drugs harm the brain beginning with the birth of an addiction. Scientific research has discovered new avenues of treatment by showing conclusively that addiction is a chronic physical disease that attacks the brain and damages key parts of the cerebral cortex and limbic system. There are various forms of treatment mentioned here, one in particular, talking therapy; an individual or group psychotherapy or a 12 step program such as NA or AA.
The success rate for this type of treatment is low, (20-30 percent) which translates (70-80 percent) not being successful in any given treatment program. Most addicted brains are physically incapable of generating the focus and cooperation necessary for this type of therapy to work exclusively on its own. It is imperative that SUD/AOD counselors are educated regarding the various proven scientific research and evidenced based studies of the brain and the damage that occurs due to the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
