“Acquainted with the night”; a poem about depression and isolation
“Acquainted with the night” by Robert Frost, gives an example of something so common in the modern world. However, in 1928 many people did not talk nor recognize the effects that depression had on a person. This poem gave something taboo a voice and turned it into a feeling.
The narrator explains his loneliness as he walks the isolated and lonely city street at night. “I have been one acquainted with the night” (1), explains how the narrator has gone through this before and is now used to it, therefore, having this feeling for awhile. “I have outwalked the furthest city light”(3) and “I have walked out in the rain- and back in rain”(2) explains what the narrator has done
Ready Player One hits some of the same situations as in the holocaust or for the book that we read “Night” like taking people spread out over a good area and combining them into a small dense area. They both also touch on the topic of how when someone is killed or something is blown up now one raises an eyebrow or if they do no one does anything about it.
Having walked “out in rain-and back in rain” shows that despite the weather, he is persistent in his practice (line 2). The rain is symbolic of a gloomy mood or even a rough patch in one’s life. In this case, the rain is parallel to his actuality. As it rains for an extended period, we can infer that the persona has suffered with depression for some time. Underlying causes of his sadness are not clear. However, the reader gets the impression he lives a life alone. His sense of being is encompassed in the imagery of the somber city streets. He is lonely, a continual moment of subtle dread haunts his life.
In Night by Elie Wiesel, he tells a story of him in the concentration camp ,in WW2, called Auschwitz. The story begins with Elie seeing how the Germans were losing the war and he thought he and his fellow jews would be safe. Instead, he notices the Germans start moving them and taking their things. Then they are shipped to the camp. In the end of the story they are liberated and saved from the camp they moved to. Throughout the story Elie’s relationships with his; father, God, and the SS change
After interviewing primarily night shift nurses, PCNAs, patients, patient families, the floor nursing manager and all five assistant nurse managers about “Quiet Night”, I was able to pick up on what was the root cause of the low score on Quiet Night on the HCAHPS survey score for the unit.
Benj Mahle discusses the reaction her students faced when she was teaching Night to her class. She states that she never had an adequate response towards her students and one of the common questions she received was, “How could the Nazis dump a truck load of babies into a burning pit, and feel nothing?”(Mahle 21). She then states that she has become comfortable answering “I don’t know” to those questions because she doesn’t even understand how someone can be that evil. In addition, she states that the student’s questions are not even answered in the novel and she believes it was meant to be unanswered. She believes Wiesel intentionally wants to plants those types of questions into the readers mind.
After reading the book “Night” I wanted to know why people try to put others down to make them feel better about themselves. I’m writing this paper because I don’t like that people are stereotypical and racist. This topic doesn’t really interest me, it just makes me curious as to why people are like this. Did something happen to them to make them hate on others? Are they just like that? Reading about the holocaust and how they were treated really made me want to why people treat others like that. In “Night” all the prisoners are treated as if they aren’t human, they’re treated like animals and I don’t know why the officers try to dehumanize them for their race but it is really sad. The prisoners had to run miles after not eating for
When reading “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas, “Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost, and “Sestina” by Elizabeth Bishops, the authors use unique imagery, symbolism, and metaphors to demonstrate a dark atmosphere during the poems. Each poem deals with dark tones such as depression, sadness, and death. By using imagery, symbolism, and metaphors, the authors are able to intensify the overall mood of the poems. Thomas uses metaphors to show different settings of his poem throughout the days and Frost utilizes metaphors, symbolism and imagery to represent the local setting and distant surroundings. In “Sestina”, Bishop uses imagery and metaphors to enhance the details of her poem.
Almost anyone in society can clarify that they have experienced depression or some type of isolation at one period in their life. It is true that experiencing such darkness causes a person to feel lonely and disconnected from the world. This can be portrayed in "Acquainted with the Night" by Robert Frost. In this poem Frost is walking in the city, at night, and in the rain all while discussing how he is acquainted with the night. The interpretation of this poem can be literal in that Frost is used to walking during the night, but it also proposes a deeper understanding.
Fredbears family diner was a big hit back in the early 1980s until something tragic happened.
The night in “Acquainted with Night” represents the authors depression, a depression that has the author feeling alone in the world. The character is completely isolated, with no one that cares about him. The depth of this depression is shown through the tone and word choice, through the watchmen, and finally through the unanswered call. The first thing that shows the authors depression are the word choices and tone used throughout the poem. Frost emphasizes his depression by using the first person term I to start 7 of the lines of the poem.
The speaker refers to the night as his acquaintance. This implies that the speaker has a lot of experience with the night, but has not become friends with it. Thus, because even the night, which has been alongside the speaker in comparison to anything or anyone else, is not a companion to the speaker, the idea of loneliness is enhanced. In addition, “rain” (2) is used to symbolize the speaker’s feelings of gloom and grief, because there is continuous pouring of the rain, which is unlikely to stop. In line 3, “city light” is used to convey the emotional distance between the speaker and society. Although the speaker has walked extensively, he has not yet interacted with anyone – thus distancing himself even further from society. Moreover, the moon, in lines 11 to 12, is used as a metaphor of the speaker’s feelings. The speaker feels extremely distant from society that he feels “unearthly.” The idea of isolation and loneliness in this poem is used as the theme of the poem; and the use of the setting and metaphors underscores the idea that the speaker feels abandoned from society.
“Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost dramatizes the conflict that the speaker experiences with the outside world, which has rejected him, or perhaps which he has rejected. The poem is composed of fourteen lines and seven sentences, all of which begin with “I have.” Frost’s first and last line, “I have been one acquainted with the night,” emphasizes what it means for the speaker to be “acquainted with the night” (line 1; 14). The speaker describes his walk in the night as journey, in which he has “walked out of rain—and back in rain” and “outwalked the furthest city light” (line 2-3). Through the depiction of the changing weather conditions, Frost signifies the passage of time, perhaps indicating that the narrator has been on his journey for a lengthy period of time and has traveled through many cities. Furthermore, the imagery of the rain at night creates a forlorn atmosphere in the poem.
When Jenny came to announce that it was time for us to join everyone at the barbeque, Louis stood when I did and then came to my side. He crooked his elbow to escort me. I was still nervous and hoped he could not feel the jitters start up as soon as I took his arm. After a moment, I decided to pretend that I was holding onto my father’s arm. I hoped I would not be as nervous; however, there was no comparison. I definitely knew it was not Mon Père’s arm, I held.
Everyday goes by in high school all the same, monday to friday from 7:45-2:25. The jocs are in the gym, the cheerleaders are well cheering for them, the stoners are outside by the side of the gym doing a deal, the geeks are in the library reading and trading comic books, the nerds are in the science room talking about how much they hate the populars and how they are going take over the world one day, the couples are in the bathroom stalls, and then there is me, Teagan Powers and of course my best friends Imogen Morgan and Peyton Nelson. We all are in the groups that we hang out with we don 't interact with other groups and we don 't change groups. Some people not from our school say it’s awful how thats our school works but somehow it actually works for ASHS, Altadena Southeast High School. It still amazes me that my high school is functional but I guess by now it doesn 't surprise the things that happen and just blow away like a feather in strong winds. But even though one thing can change your life. One word from one person one time can ruin your life and only the people involved know about it and only the people staring in it get hurt by it. I never knew what it felt like it to be in a fight until freshman year of high school. So here it goes, how my life turned upside down them shattered into a million peices. It all started my first day of high school.
It was three o’clock in the morning. Outside the window, the sky was still dark. There were barely any stars in the sky, and no cloud cluttered. The sky was painfully dark and motionless. Except for the faint light from the moon, everything seems lifeless. In a dark room, there was a girl sitting up on the bed, leaning on the wall beside her. She was looking out the window. Through the window, the girl can see the sky and the top of some buildings, however, nothing special or attractive. But, the girl has been staring at it for almost an hour now, silently and peacefully.
