Abraham Lincoln's Accomplishments

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States of America. President Lincoln accomplished many important things throughout his time as president. During his presidency, Lincoln established the U.S Department of AG, the U.S. Banking System, and his most known accomplishment, the Emancipation Proclamation.

Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. Much of his childhood was a struggle; his mother dying when he was just ten years old, and with his father being a frontiersman, money was scarce. He had to strive for a comfortable living, and he spent his days working on a farm and keeping a store. Education was also something of limited resources, but because of his hunger for knowledge, he was able to read, write, and cipher.

President Lincoln embarked a very challenging presidency from the very beginning, when he set out to lead a country facing a crisis so immense, that its very existence was threatened. In many instances, President Lincoln had to take matters into his own hands by making use of his executive powers, even when some may have questioned the Constitutionality of some his decisions at times. If one truly analyses President Lincoln’s “illegal or unconstitutional” actions, most of them were in fact the President doing what was necessary. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 and died on April 15, 1865. He was born near Hodgenville, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He also had a older sister named Sarah and a younger brother named Thomas. Due to a land dispute, his family moved to Perry County, Indiana when he was 7. Lincoln had little formal education, but was an avid reader. Lincoln's mother died when he was only 9 due to milk sickness. She died at age 34. After this, Lincoln grew very depressed and resented the labor his father gave him. A few months after Lincoln's mother's death, his father married a widow named Sarah Bush Johnston. She had 3 children of her own. Lincoln bonded with her and grew happy again.

Abraham Lincoln served a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847- '49. Lincoln started his political career with a campaign in 1832 for the Illinois General Assembly as a member of the Whig Party. The campaign was not successful though and he lost the seat. Soon after the campaign, he was elected captain of an Illinois militia company of New Salem during the Black Hawk War. In 1834, Lincoln won election to the state legislature and influenced by the Commentaries on the Laws of England, he started learning law. After admission to the bar in 1837, he moved to Springfield and established himself as a formidable adversary and successful lawyer. In 1837, Lincoln made his first protest (leader of the Illinois Whig Party) against slavery in the Illinois House and labeled it as “inhumanity based upon injustice and bad policy.”

Abraham Lincoln influenced america and other historical figures. Martin Luther King Jr. and Lincoln were one of the most prominent leaders when it came to slavery. He showed courage to stand up for what’s right and fight against for what’s wrong. Without Abe Lincoln we would not be in the position and success we have in the modern world (smithsonian).
