In 2010 Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter was published. This novel offers a look into Abraham Lincoln’s life in a very gothic way. Even though Abraham Lincoln never actually vowed to end the world of vampires, he did end one of the most inhuman practices in American history, slavery. Even though the vampires in the novel Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter were not real, there are many similarities between this novel and Abraham Lincoln’s real life.

Lincoln received forty percent of the popular vote and 180 out of 303 electoral votes and was elected the 16th president of the United States. Once the Civil War started Lincoln did everything in his power to preserve the union. By September 1862 Lincoln thought it was time to give the Emancipation Proclamation and free the southern slaves. In the presidential election of 1864 Lincoln was convinced that he would not be reelected because of the war, but his fears were unnecessary, and he was elected for his second term. On April 9th 1865 General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant. A few days later on April 14th Abraham and his wife Mary went out to see a comedy at a local theater. During the performance one of the actors, John Wilkes Booth, went to the presidential box and shot Lincoln. In the novel Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter the events leading up to Lincoln’s presidential career and even his death are very different. At first Abraham has no interest in returning to his career in politics but his good friend, and vampire, Henry convinces him to. Henry tell Abraham that him becoming president and winning the Civil War to end slavery is the only way to drive the vampires who feed on slaves back into Europe. Once Abraham realizes what is being asked of him, and the importance of it, he agrees. With a little helps from his vampire friends Abe is elected president and eventually wins the war against southern vampires, driving them out of America. John Booth is actually a vampire and chose to kill Lincoln because of Lincoln ending slavery and taking away the southern vampire’s way of feeding.
