In the Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams is to blame for what happened in Salem, Massachusetts in 1962. There are many reason to blame not only her but also her friends for helping her to accuse innocent people. Abigail convinced the other girls to begin lying about what they did in the woods and why they were in the woods. She convinced them to blame others in Salem for what was going on, saying that they ‘‘saw people with the devil’’ and the girls were so fearful that they were forced to go along with her. Abigail tried to saved herself from being punished for witchcraft and adultery by not telling Paris that she drank blood and cast a spell in order to kill Elizabeth Proctor who was John’s wife, the man she had an affair with when she was working in his house. Her love for John Proctor was so strong that the death of many innocent people did not faze her at all. She fed the court lies and …show more content…
Paris asked Abigail to tell him the truth about what was happening in the forest when he discovered them dancing there ‘‘Now tell me true, Abigail. And I pray you feel the weight of truth upon you, for now my ministry’s at stake, my ministry and perhaps your cousin’s life. Whatever abomination you have done, give me all of it now’’Abigail lied saying "we did dance, uncle, and there's the whole of it there is nothing more, I swear it uncle’’ She did not admit that she drank blood to kill Elizabeth because she knew she would be punished if she admitted it. Then she tried to lied to the girls, telling them that Mr Parris knows everythings but Betty told her that she did not tell him that she ‘‘drank blood’’ so Abigail smashed her across the face and threatens her to be quiet, after doing that she threatens all of the other girls, saying that she will bring a "pointy reckoning" on all of them if they tell anyone that. If she would not have lie, nothing bad would have happened in
In Arthur Miller 's The Crucible, the main character Abigail Williams is to blame for the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts, Abigail Williams remained a static character throughout the book. Abigail is a mean, deceitful and manipulative person who always wants her way; she has no remorse about who she hurts along her journey to get her want she wants.
Nikki Vollrath Additional Questions 1. A crucible is a vessel made of material that doesn’t melt easily and is used for high temperature chemical reactions. Miller making the title of this play The Crucible is justified because it describes the court room perfectly. They used the heat of questioning to get the truth just like in a chemical reaction you use heat to get to your product.
Imagine being tried for witchcraft and facing the fear the characters in The Crucible; What emotions would the people of Salem, Massachusetts feel? Abigail Williams is not a victim in her society simply because she is the reason that the trials happened. Abigail made up all of the events that happened to her. Abigail cannot be considered innocent if she caused the dreadful events.
In Arthur Millers “The Crucible”, Abigail Williams says to John Procter “I know how you sweated like a stallion whenever I came near you”. That is perhaps the quote that led to the start of the Salem Witch trials. Is Abigail Williams the one to blame for the events that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692? I do not believe she is because of; the towns religion, weak minded citizens, and mass hysteria setting in.
There are many characters to blame in The Crucible for the umpteen deaths of the innocent people who were hanged because of an enormous rumor going around Salem. Characters like John Proctor, who had an affair with Abigail, can easily be targeted as the antagonist. If Proctor was faithful to his wife, Elizabeth, the drama would not arise. He, however, had an affair with Abigail, who instantaneously fell in love with him and was desperate for his attention, which resulted in her wanting to get rid of his wife so that she can have him to herself. Proctor committed adultery, therefore he is an evident suspect. Additionally, Danforth can easily be blamed for all the chaos, as well. Danforth was very gullible and naïve, he constantly believed the hysterical acts Abigail and her friends kept displaying. As biased as he tried not to be, Danforth was power hungry and would not listen to the words of others, such as those of Reverend Hale or John Proctor, about the girls suppressing the truth and accusing others of witchcraft. Abigail’s group of friends is another important factor which added to the numerous deaths of the faultless residents of Salem. Her friends constantly followed her around, mimicking her actions and obeying her orders. They listened to everything she said, therefore the truth of what truly went on in the woods never escaped. Despite the fact that all these people could have clearly been accused of witchcraft and hanged, Abigail bears the ultimate responsibility
Arthur Miller author of “The Crucible” is based on the Puritan society in Salem Massachusetts 1692 and more specifically on the witch hunts and witch trials that happened in Salem during that time. Many main characters in “The Crucible” affect the story’s outcome and also affect other characters within the book as well. Abigail Williams is one of the main characters in “The Crucible” who caused many conflicts and ultimately led to the outcome of many characters deaths. Abigail is 17 years and an orphan who is being taken care of by her uncle Reverend Parris. She does cause a lot of mayhem with all the lying she does but she always lies to protect herself no matter who gets hurt or gets killed. She also lies to get revenge on people who she believes have wronged her for example Elizabeth for firing her and because she want to be with her husband John Proctor. John Proctor also neglects Abigail and will no leave her wife Elizabeth
In the play “The Crucible”, I believe Abigail Williams was the one who was responsible for the deaths of the people who were wrongly convicted and hanged. Abigail was a young girl who was obsessed with a man named John Proctor. She was so in love with him, that she would have done anything she could to be with him. She was caught doing something she should not have been doing, and was willing to do whatever she had to do to keep from getting in trouble.
In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail Williams’s flaws- lust, mendacity, and jealousy that led her to be mostly responsible for most of the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. I believe that if Abigail would not have been overcome with lust and jealousy and had the ability to lie that easily, that most of the tragedy would have not occurred. Abigail was, in my opinion, the leader of the girls and their lies. Had she not been there as the head of the girls, the girls probably would not have continued on with the lies. In the small town of Salem, Massachusetts everything appears to be normal until some of the young girls of the town begin acting strange.
Abigail Williams is the cause to all of the hysteria in Arthur Miller’s book The Crucible. In The Crucible Abigail’s parents are killed by Native Indian’s which leaves her character as a deceitful, untrustworthy, selfish, delusional, and excessively manipulative woman. Due to these character traits Abigail William’s is given cause as to why she was the reason for Salem being left in a state of hysteria. Abigail manipulated her salve Tituba, and a cluster of girls to practice witchcraft in the forest in an attempt to kill her lover’s wife, Elizabeth. When she is gets caught both her slave, Tituba, and Abigail falsely list names of women who committed witchcraft.
Arthur Miller's “The Crucible” is one of the most controversial, and famous plays he has ever written due to its representation of the clear similarities between witch hunts of the past to the ones that where ongoing during the red scare of the 1950's. The play is specifically set during the Salem witch trials/hunts that occurred in 1692. While portions of the play are fiction, the play itself is historically accurate, especially when it comes to identifying who the villain is. It is unequivocally clear that the villain in this sad story is the young girl, Abigail Williams. While the case can be made that there where obviously other villains that had a more direct role in the injustices that occurred during the witch trials, at the end of the day no matter how you look at it Abigail was the main/real villain because she was the initial instigator of the witch hunts, practiced deceit and deception, influenced her vengeful will upon others, and lied; without hesitation nor remorse. These dishonorable qualities that Abigail possess combined with her own motives to gain vengeance(kill) against Elizabeth Proctor and assume her place as John Proctor's(her love interest) wife is enough evidence to make an educated claim that Abigail Williams in fact the main antagonist, and ultimately the villain.
Abigail Williams is at fault for the trials that took place in Salem. The reason for this is because Abigail threated the girls into not saying anything about what really happened. She also put her own personal agenda, when accusing people, and she became the face of the accusers. With that reputation, she was feared and avoided by the rest of the town. When putting her own personal agenda, she chooses to accuser certain people, like Elizabeth Proctor, who was the wife of John Proctor, whom she believed was her lover. Not only that but as her power and influence on the town grew, she began to accuse people who did not fit the mold of being a witch. At the beginning of the crucible, when the girls are together in Betty's room, they want to say
Is Abigail really to blame for the Crucible? What did she do to become the staple for who to blame? When people think of the Crucible, they blame Abigail for causing it and leading everyone else who seemed to be a major role.

Abigail Williams portrays to be a 17 year old female in Salem, and the niece of the minister of the Salem church, Reverend Parris. Abigail was once the servant of the Proctor household until Elizabeth Proctor, the wife of John Proctor, head of house and local farmer, discovered that her husband John was having an affair with young Abigail Williams. When Abigail gets fired she then brings a group of local girls with her to the woods with Tituba, Reverend Parris’ slave from the Barbados, to wish death upon Elizabeth Proctor because of what she had done to her and John Proctor’s ‘relationship’.
