In the play “The Crucible”, I believe Abigail Williams was the one who was responsible for the deaths of the people who were wrongly convicted and hanged. Abigail was a young girl who was obsessed with a man named John Proctor. She was so in love with him, that she would have done anything she could to be with him. She was caught doing something she should not have been doing, and was willing to do whatever she had to do to keep from getting in trouble. One night Abigail’s uncle, Parris, found her along with Tituba and other young girls, dancing in the forest. This is what began the series of lies the girls were going to tell. Parris asked Abigail what they were doing in the forest and Abigail told him that all they were doing was dancing. …show more content…
She’d previously been his servant, and they’d had an affair. When Elizabeth Proctor, John’s wife, found out about the affair between the girl and her husband, she put Abigail out of her house. John then decided to end the affair and start trying to make things better between his wife and himself. But, Abigail was still in love and still wanted to be with John. She would do anything to get rid of Elizabeth and take her place in John’s life. This is the reason she went into the woods in the first place. She wanted to “cast a spell” and make John love her and only her. John came up to her and told her he knew she was lying about all the women being witches, and he told her to stop and leave him and his family alone. At this point Abby was mad that John no longer wanted to be with her, so she decided she’d frame Elizabeth as being a witch. She’d used Mary Warren, the Proctor’s new servant, to do it. Mary had made Elizabeth a poppet and stuck a needle in the stomach for safe keeping. When Abigail saw her do that, she knew that that was the perfect way to frame Elizabeth. Abby stuck herself in the stomach and told everyone that it was Elizabeth’s spirit that’d done it. So when they found Elizabeth with the poppet everyone assumed what Abigail said had to be
Even though Abigail told John about her and her friends dancing naked in the woods, she did not tell John that Elizabeth could die because she drank a potion that could kill Elizabeth. This reveals the theme of the story because Abigail will continue to lie and deceive whomever to gain the relationship that she wants back. During the trials people talked about who committed witchcraft and why because Betty was sick after the night that the girls went to the woods. Abigail accused others of performing witchcraft in the woods for her own safety. She also tried to play with Proctor’s view on his wife by ensuring that he will think differently of her. Also this was a way for Abigail to ensure that she was not going to get caught with her using the voodoo doll on Elizabeth with the help of Tituba or the potion that she drank that might kill Elizabeth. Abigails motives on naming other people’s name during the trial was to acknowledge the fact that her name was clear and not accused of performing witchcraft. However, during the trial, someone had blurted Abigail’s name and she constantly denies because she was to stay innocent even though she is in the wrong. She does this because in her mind she wants Elizabeth to come out as the evil one and not

Is it about a teen girl Named Abigail Williams and a middle aged man named John Proctor that has an affair and cause chaos in a small town named Salem. In Salem many people’s actions cause a lot of people being arrested for dealing with the devil and witchery. Those accusations put Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Tituba, and many more and an abundant of People is accused of witchery and devil related accusations led to their deaths. Many people blame Abigail for what she has done, I have found that she was not the only one to blame for the causes of those people whom have lost their lives due to people believing in other peoples false accusations, Abigail is simply one of those people that accuse for their own benefits.
When the girls and Abigail were dancing in the woods, Abigail did some strange and dark things. She drank a charm to kill Elizabeth Proctor because she wanted John all to herself. She wanted to get Elizabeth killed because she is the reason that Abigail could not be with John and she wanted Elizabeth out of the way.
Abigail is a great leader and through the play, she uses intimidation to create an atmosphere of fear. At the beginning of the play Parris discovers Abigail and the girls dancing naked in the woods. He thought that they were doing some
She, along with a couple other girls, met with Reverend Parris’s slave, Tituba, and practiced witchcraft. During the ritual, she casts a spell on John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, as a means to damage their relationship. In doing so, she would be able to be with John Proctor permanently. When Parris finds the girls in the woods, Abigail lies about the ritual so her affair would remain a secret. Moreover, she feared that her reputation within the town would be ruined.
Nikki Vollrath Additional Questions 1. A crucible is a vessel made of material that doesn’t melt easily and is used for high temperature chemical reactions. Miller making the title of this play The Crucible is justified because it describes the court room perfectly. They used the heat of questioning to get the truth just like in a chemical reaction you use heat to get to your product.
After reading and watching Act 1 of The Crucible, I’ve realized that there are quite a few characters to blame for all the witchcraft and dancing in the woods. The person I feel is the most guilty so far is Abigail. I think that Abigail has told the most lies and has contributed to the problem more than anyone else. Abigail took all of her friends into the woods to dance and drank the blood of a chicken. She also removed her clothes and ran around the woods. She then tells all of the other girls to keep their mouths shut about the things that happened that night, even though they all know that what Abigail did was far more than just dancing. She lies to her uncle about the situation, and she eventually blames Tituba once she realizes that her
She charges Elizabeth with attempted murder and says she was stabbed with a needle while eating and accused Elizabeth's spirit. At dinner with Reverend Parris, Abigail screams and falls to the floor and “stuck two inches in [her] flesh, he draw out a needle” ( Miller 71). She testified that it was Elizabeth's spirit to accuse her as a witch so that she can be hung and Abigail can have John. Her plan makes it to the court where she lies about her affair with John Proctor to save her image. In court Proctor confesses to their affair and explains to the judge that “she thinks to dance with [him] on my wife’s grave”(Miller 102). Abigail wishes to exterminate Elizabeth and have Proctor to herself, but Proctor is determined to show Abigail's true colors that he is willing to ruin his
Lust, mendacity, and jealousy are three things that can change how a person feels and acts. Sometimes we can't help it and it causes lots of problems. These problems then accumulate and cause something we did not intend to happen and this is something that happen in the town of salem. Abigail had these 3 characteristics which made her do things and blame witchcraft on many people causing several deaths.
Throughout the history of the human race we read of stories of witches, scapegoats, and false accusations. Many times the accuser feels that they are held back from rising in public standing and only by exposing “witches” can they succeed. The character Abigail in the crucible was in love with a married man john proctor. After attempts to swoon him failed she used a potentially name tarnishing issue in the town to get her “prize”. She now believed that if she could get john’s wife Elizabeth out of the way that he would finally love her.
Secondly Abigail and some girls were caught by Parris dancing in the woods, and one of the girls drank blood. One of the girls was running around naked until Parris caught arrived. Parris had questioned Abigail on page 10 Parris had said “And what shall I say to them?” Then Abigail responds saying “uncle,we did dance; let you tell them I
In in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, many people are accused of being by the Devil’s side, like doing actions that are against their explicit laws. They are victims of crimes that they did not actually commit. A victim is someone that is affected negatively by an event. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail is not a victim of her society because, she attempts to cast a charm towards Elizabeth in the beginning of the play, she is also mostly the one trying to push and continue her relationship with John Proctor, and she was the leader of the girls who went into the woods doing witchcraft.
According to John Bevere, a highly-religious American author and orator, “An offended heart is the breeding ground of deception.” This is a fact that the character Abigail Williams learned in Arthur Miller’s play titled, The Crucible. In this work, she continually lied to others in multiple desperate attempts to get everything she wanted. Abigail Williams worked throughout The Crucible to deceive the other characters, wanting to avoid getting in trouble for heathenous activities, and also to gain power and love in the town of Salem. Her deception reinforced the strength of the Puritan lifestyle, mass hysteria, and fear, ultimately creating meaning within the play.
No matter what, we will always have a darkside. Abigail has an evil character due to all her lies and evil witchcraft she does. She entered the woods with some girls to do witchcraft, so she create something so she can get what she desires. In the play, “The Crucible” written by A.Miller, Abigail is a contemptible character due to her patulous lies, manipulating individuals, and suffering no consequences for her actions.
