In South Dakota there are several codes and regulations that are specific for the climate and geographic features in that state. most of the codes south dakota uses are part of the international codes. But, the state and towns can add to the codes if they feel necessary. (2015 international codes council,inc). There are several systems that the homeowner needs to follow to build a house correctly in South Dakota. Including, foundation, venting, interior walls, and ceilings, exterior walls and roofs, etc. After reading my essay the homeowner will learn the concept of how to build a legal home in South Dakota that goes by code and is precisely developed. When starting slab foundation and installing ICFs the homeowner needs to start with excavation. During this process the homeowner has to have the sod (grass). while doing a slab foundation there needs spots dug for the footers. If the contractor digs to deep into the foundation the footers can not be placed. But for an Insulating concrete form system it is a dry-stacked (without mortar) that is filled with concrete. The blocks interlock almost like legos do that developes the bottom of the house (walls/floors) and are filled with concrete. (Insulating concrete form, Wikipedia). There is a new International code for slab foundation which says that it needs to be insulated not just a slab. So, instead of the homeowner putting in insulation they can surround the slab foundation with ICF and it will provide an insulator for the foundation. The most common home that is developed has either a gable roof or a hip roof. A gable roof has a ridge in the center of the roof and slopes downwards in two directions. This type is easy to develop and can be used for almost any type of building. Gable roofs look like an “A” after constructed. Hip roofs are different than gable roofs.
