Rescue, Don’t Buy Topic: Rescuing animals instead of buying them General Purpose: to persuade Specific Purpose: I am going to persuade the class that it is better to rescue pets than to buy them. Thesis Statement: It is better to rescue animals than to buy them for ethical as well as practical reasons such as health and cost. Introduction Every day in the United States, approximately 10,000 people and 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. There will never be enough homes for all of these animals, and as a result millions are killed by animal control or die by themselves every year. If people would adopt their pets from a rescue or shelter, and not buy from pet stores or breeders, many lives would be saved and a lot of misery would be averted. Also, you end up with a great animal. Body Need (problem) Irresponsibility and lack of knowledge on the part of people buying pets is a huge problem. You need to know about the animals that are waiting in shelters and avoid buying our new pet. These are some shocking statistics about dogs and cats in the US. • We have 70 million stray dogs and cats. • 30 million animals die every year from cruelty, neglect, or exploitation. • 6 – 8 million cats and dogs enter shelters each year, of which 3 – 4 million are euthanized (nearly 10,000 per day). • U.S. taxpayers pay about $2 billion to impound, shelter, euthanize, and dispose of homeless animals. • Percentage of animals entering U.S. shelters that are healthy and adoptable: 90% • Only
To be more specific, animals get abused or abandoned every 10 seconds which shouldn't be happening. Overall about 7.6 million animals go into shelters nationwide and out of those only 3-4 million of them get adopted every year. Not only do 2.7 million dogs and cats get killed every year because the shelters get too full and there aren’t enough homes to adopt them but in high kill shelters animals get killed if they aren't adopted in a certain amount of time. Around easter time people buy chicks and rabbits, and often abandon them, not realizing they still need care and they also will dye these animals different colors thinking it will do them no harm but in reality it does. That is why in some states that is illegal. Abandoning animals in many states is a crime. 1 out of every 10 dogs get a home they will always live in which means that most dogs do not get a home that they will always live in and less than 20% of cats and 15-20% of dogs get reunited with their owner after they are lost. Homeless animals outnumber humans 5-1 which are a lot. One way to help animals is by adopting abused or abandoned animals. People can also donate to charities that help abandoned animals. Many animals go to shelters because they get left behind by their owners or they were found on the streets. Most pets that are stray were kept indoors. There are about 70 million stray cats in the united states. Animal Abuse and abandonment are
"Why breed or buy while shelter animals die?" Animal breeding is becoming a growing issue in the world, more and more people are breeding and buying not only dogs, but other animals too. Animal rescue centers around the globe are being filled to their maximum capacity with homeless, needing, and deserving animals. Overpopulation is a big issue with animal breeding, some breeders are for exotic or endangered animals such as Ocelots, Rhinos, and Pandas, but other people are breeding domestic animals such as Dogs or Cats. There are already too many domestic animals in our world and these breeders are making it even worse. Overpopulated animal breeding should be illegal because it is wrong, there is a myth that purebred animals are superior, and the fact that shelters or animal rescue centers have an extensive choice of animals to pick from.
Some of the shelters in California are amazing, at Sonoma County’s animal shelter has new policies for the crowded conditions and are working to reduce the number of healthy animal’s that are killed. Dog and cat owners who may want to give up their pets have to make an appointment with the shelter staff to discuss alternatives. Healthy animals will be taken in only if the space is available, otherwise the owners must wait. According to one source, “Most public shelters have around 393,000 cats that enter public shelters and it increased to 25,000. About 278,000 cats were killed in shelters in
In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local community at The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.
Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be
Good afternoon, I'm Joanna Pulido and today I am going to talk about the issues of animal overpopulation. When a cat or dog is born it doesn’t know what its life is going to be, unfortunately many times they never get to have a good one. There is a significant amount of animal overpopulation so, remarkable measures need to be taken for the sake of the animals. There are many reasons why pet overpopulation is a problem, but three of the biggest ones i believe that are the causes are, that cats and dogs on the street are reproducing with little chances on finding homes. Second, pet owners get rid of pets becauses they can’t have them anymore or want them. Lastly, pet owners breed their dogs and sell the babies for profit. However very many drastic
If we create bigger facilities that can hold more animals, less of them will be euthanized. Where can we find the money to do this? If animal shelters have bake sales or some type of weekly funding it would be profitable to all animal shelter organizations. One animal shelter had an adoption fair where families could meet the animals and participate in games in order to get a better feel of the animal they are thinking about adopting. Doing so increased the adoption rate by 5%. Although this may seem like it isn’t a lot, because of this fair, there were more animals getting adopted and less being euthanized. Partnering with large-scale Pet companies could also help.
In Conclusion, Conclusion I. Summary Statement: Animal cruelty is a major problem. We need to stand up and help protect and save these animals. They do not have their own voice so we have to be it. Animals are suffering in puppy mills.
Well, luckily, there are shelters in different places that help animals that aren’t able to take care of themselves. Did you know that every year 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats enter animal shelters in U.S.? If you think that figure was huge, now imagine around 1.5 million of them are being euthanized every year because the shelter doesn’t have enough money or volunteers (ASPCA) to take care of them. However, this number can be significantly reduced if we start to make a change. With my speech, I would like to persuade you to from now on look for pets in a shelter instead of a pet store. In order to do this, I will provide information about the differences between shelters and pet stores, reasons to adopt a pet, and how to do it.
70,000 dogs and cats are born each year. This is a problem why? Because a lot of them don’t get a home. Also if they don,t get a home then they don’t live as long. This is called animal abandonment. Pet overpopulation is also a big problem. One person who helps name is faye carey she helps the animals stay happy, so that the world is a better place to live.
These dogs and cats can be saved if more families adopted rather than shopped from their local pet store or breeder.
Is it ethical for animals to have the same rights as humans? During this paper I will present the views of both sides. I will try my best to give the reader a chance to come to there own unbiased conclusion. I will talk about the key areas of animal ethics. I will present the facts and reasoning behind the arguments over Animal cruelty, testing, hunting, and improper housing. My conclusion will hopefully bring us closer to answering many of the question surrounding “Animal Rights and Ethics”.
There are many problems with abandoning an animal, in some states it is even a crime. Some abandoned animals get sent to testing facilities, to which they will be scarred even further. Animals of all species can be subject to abuse and abandonment, and over 6,000,000 animals are abandoned each year in the United States of America (Aldf). Another problem with abandoning an animal is that it can become feral, to which a person or child could walk by and get attacked. Any time a person goes to a shelter and sees a dog or even a kitten, and thinks, “I wish I could”, they need to think financially, and then they need to think about the animals needs. If a person knows that they cannot take care of a pet but have enough to help, they should. However, if people see a commercial for animal abandonment, they are more likely to call and make a donation rather than going to the local shelter to make a donation.
Animals have always played an essential role in many aspects of this world. Some people look upon these roles with favoritism, some with disgust. Animals are considered different from humans by some people because of their behavior, mannerisms or actions. Some animals are used as food by humans and other animals, while others are trapped for their furs. Many times people acquire animals for pets, only to neglect or mistreat them. For many years, the ethical treatment of animals has been a very controversial topic for moral discussion, often in reference to an ethical code or rule. In this paper, I will discuss these ethical issues identified with the treatment of animals as well as exploring these issues from a virtual ethicist’s
Many may ask, why waste a valuable life? Why kill when you can just save them and adopt? Animals deserve the chance to live just like any person in this world does. Over the past 20 years, animal shelter communities in the United States has been grappling with the overpopulation problem of domestic animals (Rowan). Nationally, around four million animals are killed in animal shelters each year. Of the animals killed, roughly 95% of the shelters animals and treatable and healthy (Winograd). Each year between two to four million animals are euthanized (Winograd). Normally these animals are domestic such as dogs, cats, horses, and so on. Most people like to believe that the animals are being put down because an incurable disease but that is far from the truth. You have to take in account those who are euthanized because there are not enough homes or space to
