Brown married another slave when she was eighteen, and together they had four children. In 1835 Brown’s family was broken apart when they were all sold to different slave owners. Clara was sold to a plantation owner in Kentucky. When Brown was 56 years old, she received her freedom and required by law to leave the state, and work her way west as a cook and laundress in Denver, Colorado. Alexander, by putting Ms. Burton next to such an important and inspirational historical figure, gives the readers’ and idea of how incredible Susan is. When Jane was born the doctors thought that she was dead and then proceeded to shoved her in a night stand drawer while they saved her mother's life.When the doctors opened the nightstand drawer they discovered Jane Herbert Wilkinson alive and well. Jane was the tenth child in her family.Sadly,Jane’s father died when jane was only one years old .Jane later became an orphan at the age of fourteen. Jane later got married to James long in may of 1815 and had her first child when she was only eighteen years old .In September of 1821 jane was expecting her second child and stayed behind at a post while james,her husband left ,she vowed to not leave till he returned but , he never did. She had her child in a very harsh winter,on the Bolivar peninsula in december of 1821. Ann Deborah Lynn knew she was born to be leader despite her circumstances as an African American in Lexington, Kentucky. Everyday a different crime is committed; however, the reason or motive behind it is not always understood. Over the years, theories were developed to explain why certain crime occurs. For example, Andrea Yates was a mother of 5 who drowned her children due to a mental illness she endured, but there are many theories that play a vital role in explaining why she committed this crime.
