Analysis of “A Raisin in the Sun”
There are many forms of symbolism throughout the play. The most important forms of symbolism are the insurance check, the house, and Mama’s plant. The insurance check represents hope, but it is a false hope (“Symbolism in A Raisin in the Sun”). From the beginning of the play the check itself causes many issues in the family even though it is just a paper with a dollar amount on it. Another example of symbolism in the play is the house that the family will be moving into. The house represents the hope the family has and how a new beginning and change is coming. Even though the family is nervous due to all of the things happening in other neighborhoods they still want something better for the family. The last important form of symbolism is the mother's plant. The plant is a symbol of the dreams that Mama has. She cares or the plant as it needs to be nourchared and taken care of. The sunlight is the hope that keeps the plant, the dream, alive (“Symbolism in A Raisin in the Sun”). The plant is a multifaceted symbol. The characters in the story have problems to face internally and externally. Despite the era that they were living in, they had to make decisions that would affect the rest of their life. Examples of personal growth are seen mostly in Walter. In the beginning of the play Walter is less excited about his life for many reasons that he does not fully know how to deal with. Walter has a drinking problem and seems to use alcohol as an outlet on life. It is not until Walter thinks about his father and all the things he had sacrificed for his family that Walter buckles down and becomes more of the man his family needs for him to
