Reading Response Journal #1 I chose to read Rohinton Mistry 's A Fine Balance, a story about four very different people living in India during a period of great civil unrest known as The State of Emergency. I found this book incredibly easy to get into because of the way Mistry writes. He seems to create the story around you, placing you in the setting as a viewer, involving you in the lives of the characters. Mistry clearly outlines the political and economic situation of India at the time, further emphasizing the plight of the main characters. The first thing I noticed about Mistry 's writing style is his incredible ability to make you feel like you 've actually shifted to another country, another continent even. His descriptive …show more content…
With no way of telling Dina where they have gone, trouble ensues. Eventually they make it back to the city only to leave again when Ishvar decides Om needs a wife. The two travel back to their hometown, but their bad luck follows them. Mistry leads up to the dramatic events in their home town with loads of foreshadowing and short diction and sentences. The atmosphere is charged and tense and when you read it you feel nervous and anxious as to what will happen next. The ending of this section, left me fairly horrified with what I had read. To be honest despite the fact that various horrible events happened to the characters in this book, I had not expected this outcome. What happens to Om and Ishvar is utterly devastating and completely changed my preconceived notions of Mistry and his ability to write.
Reading Response Journal #4 There was no real Canadian connection with this novel, except the author being Canadian. I could say that it was a basic theme of multiculturalism, but I don 't think that really applies to this book. Next time I 'll pick a more "Canadian" author.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite it 's heartbreaking ending. I found Mistry 's style of writing impressive and elegant without being over the top. He takes you on a roller coaster of emotions throughout the novel, leading you from happiness to depression in the blink of an eye. This book taught me something I had already vaguely known, that the world can be a very cruel
In my opinion I thought that this book was a very good book. In this chapter I will describe the setting, theme, plot and conflict etc. This book had a few different settings like
This book is great for people who enjoy gore, suspense and a little romance. If you love to see good character cooperation and the characters in a lot of life or death situations where you really don’t know if they’ll make it or not this is the book for you. This books also shows that even the underdogs can still make a difference, and that gives us hope in life when there seems to be nothing left. Again if you love gore, suspense and a little bit of romance this is the perfect book for you, you won’t be
This book is a very good book. It is not one of my favorite books, but it is in, or somewhat close to, the top ten list. It has an intriguing story and has some humor in it to make sure that it isn’t all mellow.
I think that this work is a very well put together book. Even though In the earlier questions I make it sound like a ten on ten this book is not. I rate this book a 9/10 for the soul reason that it was on a very directed path and you could the events that were going to happen before they did by just reading the book. Even the twist that the author put in were not that book which made some of the book predictable and who really wants a book in which they know everything that is going to happen.
This book, was never to my liking, I always wondered why Mrs.Silva always talked about this book. I was never interested in reading really long books, my mind always would drift off but this book had something about it that was connected with me!
It is an incredible novel told in a gripping form that was difficult to put down. The novel amalgamates both sorrow and humor to produce the perfect balance. I personally prefer not to read lengthy novels spanning 600+ pages, so when I first began to read the novel I was uninterested in the extensive details and descriptions, but as I progressed into the novel I began to fall in love with the character Owen Meany and his persona, that I couldn’t resist putting this novel down. I found the novel to be life changing as it irrefutably reflects the perpetual axiom that you don’t have to be “someone great” in order to be an influence for others. After all, it is the minute things we do in life that can have a substantial impact on
For the most part, the novel was very enjoyable. One aspect of it that I loved was that the storyline was extremely intense, which always compelled me to find out what would happen next. For example,
Another thing that I liked about the book is that at the beginning, the wake/vigil/funeral was so accurately described. Funerals are awkward, tiring, and numbing. Meursault
This book combines characteristics of a suspense thriller with those of a tragedy and is a very interesting book to read. I liked the detail that the author went into about the psychological aspects of the characters in making the decisions that they made. I thought that the characters were well developed and I liked the detail that the author went into about the settings. A detailed setting can really increase the intensity and realism of a situation in a book. This book contained some difficult words that lower level readers might not understand. I would recommend that anyone looking for a suspense/tragedy oriented book should look to this one. The beginning is a somewhat tedious read, but that is only because the author takes so much time to develop the
In the various literature studied this semester in ELA A30 there are numerous criteria for deciding Canadian identity. The poem “I am a Canadian” by Duke Redbird mentions many Canadian identities. The quote “I’m a lobster fisherman in Newfoundland. I’m a clambake in P.E.I.” describes the uniqueness of each province. The maritime provinces are involved in fishery while the prairie provinces are rich in resources such as wheat. Different regions have their own identity and their unique identity makes up Canada as a whole. There are things that Canadian enjoys “I’m a clown in Quebec during carnival. I’m a mass in the cathedral of St. Paul. I’m a hockey game in the forum”. These things that Canadian take part in make them distinct from other countries.
I really liked the book. It was very enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to my friends, because I think they
In comparing an August, 1974 film review from The Great Speckled Bird with one from the New York Times from the same time period and regarding the same film, two very different styles of writing, and the thoughts of two very different kinds of writers are immediately found. The tone and language of the two reviews are vastly different, as is the review content for Robert Altman’s California Split (1974).
Introduction: “Ambition is a lust that is never quenched, but grows more inflamed and madder by enjoyment.” – Thomas Otway. This quote best depicts the story of Macbeth in William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth, in how Macbeth discovers new ambition in himself following every act he commits in order to satiate his previous desire. The play “The Tragedy of Macbeth” by William Shakespeare develops the idea that when individuals exhibit unbridled ambition, they often respond by committing heinous acts, which results in detrimental reverberations for themselves and others. In other words, an individual that possesses an uncontrollable drive to achieve a goal often pursue detestable actions which can lead to damaging effects for themselves and others.
Macbeth is a play built on murder and madness. The play Macbeth is written by William Shakespeare that takes place in eleventh century Scotland. The story is about a Scottish Lord named Macbeth. Macbeth is given predictions from witches that he will be king.
I loved this book so much. There is so much action and is so much better and exciting with so much amazing detail and description. This is one of my favorite books ever. When you read it, you don’t want to put it down and it makes you feel like you are with the characters in the book and you know them so well. I recommend this book to anyone who can read at this level.
