I adore the elderly and their perspective on life. Up until the point I left for college I have volunteered at Pelican Pointe Assisted Living, a nursing facility. For five years I accompanied residents through their daily adventures and activities. Assuredly I made several friend who I still exchange letters with. Each resident has varying degrees of required assistance in continuing their daily activities. Among those that aid are occupational therapists. Because each patient's needs are so different, a high level of creativity is needed to provide the most effective care. My career aspiration is to work with the aging populous as an occupational therapist. Currently I am majoring in Public Health and will be adding a major in kinesiology
I am writing this letter for Ms. Tierney D. Williams who is applying to Occupational Therapy Programs. The student will apply to more than one OT Program. I have only known the applicant for approximately two years. Ms. Williams is a resourceful, emotionally stable, and innovative person. She works well in a group or individual setting. Ms. Williams enthusiastically participated in classroom exercises and discussions. The student was enrolled in two classes that I teach, HLSC 4300-Epidemiology (earned “A” grade) and HCAP 2011-Writing Lab (earned “P” grade).
I believe that my prior work and school related experiences allow me to stand out above other future occupational therapy assistants. I am currently in school obtaining a bachelor's degree in psychology. Throughout the past three years I have taken classes not only in the field of psychology but also anatomy and physiology, biology, and chemistry. I strongly believe that the time I spent while obtaining a bachelor's degree and focusing on healthcare classes will allow me to do exceptionally well in the occupational therapy field. Since I have taken many undergraduate classes while obtaining a psychology degree, I have taken many of the classes that are incorporated into the coursework at zane state, therefore I will have less classes to take
This scholarship is very important to me in many ways. This scholarship will help me physically and emotionally if I receive money. For instance, it will make me stress less about how I am going to be able to pay for my tuition and fees and not have debt. Also, it will give me a way to purchase my books for the classes I will take.Since I will not receive financial aid I will have to apply for more scholarships. I plan to go to Northwest Shoals to be able to get my basics done and further my education and transfer to Wallace State to be able to become an Occupational Therapist it has always been a desire to work with many people and help someone out if they needed it. Some of my college goals is to be able to maintain a high GPA and do the
Occupational Therapy is a type of therapy that works on everyday skills like writing and reading, and also they help with kids who need assistance walking and talking. Most occupational therapists can be found in schools, doctors, and hospitals. Their goal is to help kids live a better and more effective life. School occupational therapist, like the one I am job shadowing, she works with mostly with young special needs children ages ranging 4 to 6 years old. Occupational therapy can be found with all ages ranging from young to old. I personally would love to pursue a career as an occupational therapist that works with smaller kids and special needs kids in schools.
Field Work 24 weeks in OT setting where I want to focused on based on Field work 1.
While shadowing occupational therapy professionals at Montgomery General Hospital, I gained much insight into the profession and the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of a COTA. The entire facility caseload consisted of geriatric patients, and many of the diagnoses were due to cognitive deficits or recent falls due to weak lower extremities. Diagnoses observed were dementia, CVA, a hip fracture, a total knee replacement, osteoarthritis of the shoulder, bilateral upper extremity/lower extremity weakness, and total blindness.
Abraham Lincoln once said “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Both careers I have chosen fit my goals, however, one career seems to fit my goals better than the other. I have decided to choose between an Occupational Therapy Assistant and a Psychiatric Nurse. Someday, I want to have a family, I want a career that will financially support my family and I also want a career that I will love doing for years, until I am at the retirement age. I want to be able to be content with the career I choose, and not go back and forth between careers.
An occupational therapy degree can be obtained through a master’s or doctorate degree. Courses for this degree may include anatomy and physiology, psychology, biology, kinesiology, and anthropology. Clinical rotations will also be required for each program. The individual must graduate from an accredited program, pass the national board examination to become certified, and take a licensure exam for whatever state they plan to work in. Occupational therapy, like physical therapy, has specialization in pediatrics, physical rehabilitation, gerontology, and mental health.
“What if there was a job that allowed someone to have endless flexibility and creativity; a profession that is respected and is in overwhelming demand... Most importantly, wouldn’t it be nice to find a job in which you could make an impact, big or small, on the lives of each individual person you worked with? I found this job and that is why I decided to pursue a degree in occupational therapy" (Springer, J., 2015). This testimonial comes from a practicing occupational therapist who has found value in his life's work. Occupational therapy is not a job where "one size fits all"; there are many different demographics of people who need occupational therapy in different environments. Although, all occupational therapists have the same skills
A young man with a spinal cord injury who must learn how to walk again. An elderly individual who can’t remember anything from the past day and needs help running errands. Both are activities that an occupational therapist would help with. An occupational therapist’s help citizens who have physical, mental, or developmental set-backs. Occupational therapists work hard at fulfilling people’s lives that have been altered due to injury or a disability.
My career goal is to become an Occupational Therapist and specialize in pediatrics. I want to specialize in pediatrics because I have always loved to be around children and be able to help them in whatever they need. Also, pediatrics is important to me because kids are our future and if I can help kids for their future I will be glad to do so. Helping kids become more independent on their activities of daily living makes me happy because I am helping them to become more independent and make them feel like they can accomplish anything. In order to be able to do this I have to get a Master Degree and I plan on getting this degree from Loma Linda University. In five years I see myself working in the Occupational Therapy setting and working with kids. I see myself, making others
I am planning to graduate with my bachelors in Therapeutic Recreation. I will then take that degree to enter the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. I have chosen this occupation because it makes me happy to assist the people who want to get back in the routine in life. My patients age from 3 years old all the way to 100. I love being active, and it requires plenty of energy. My patients may have delayed development or may have traumatic brain damage. Patience is an important skill to have. I will have to get my hands dirty sometimes, but not all jobs are clean. My mother is a special education teacher in a PIP class. It is truly rewarding to me to help her kids with eating breakfast, and to simple as assisting with writing their name.
Once I researched and mentored what Occupational Therapy was, I fell in love with it and I have not looked back since. For me, it is a calling. It was amazing to me to see patients with their conditions, and they still have a good attitude about working towards getting better. One major aspect that I love about occupational therapy is that you make strong connections with your patients. I am looking forward to learning more in this life- span development class because it will be very useful information towards my career of occupational therapy.
Occupational Therapy is a career involving science in order to aid every day life of a child or adult. The career I am looking into and interviewed is Occupational Therapy involving children. Occupational Therapy also handles adults, but that isn’t what I would want for my career. In order to be an Occupational Therapist for children, you must enjoy being around kids and know how to handle them. You must be kind in how you speak to them. You will need to have a lot of patience. Occupational Therapy helps change a habit or help a child learn to do something and this will take time and patience. You will need to be gentle and careful with the children. You must also study to know how to handle certain children different ways. Each child will have their own unique difficulties and you would need to know how to approach each situation differently.
The sight of frustration and helplessness in a person's eyes; determination is dwindling, replaced with anger. Someone that was once so strong now lying restlessly in bed. This was an everlasting vision of my dad, a manly man struggling to care for himself. How could one person so strong change drastically beneath my own eyes? His hand was shaking trying to feed himself in the morning.
