At 17 years old, I had the grueling task of deciding how I wanted to spend 40 plus years of my life. I always aspired to land a career in the medical field, so I majored in biology like most pre-med hopefuls, but during my junior year, I no longer desired to become a physician. The medical field was calling out to me, but the specialty of focus was incorrect. After graduation, I went back to the basics and put my nursing assistant certification to use.

When the number of elderly persons increases, there will be more long-term care residents (Fox-Rose, 2000). This increase will require many caregivers in long term care facilities (Tak, Sweeney, Alterman, Baron, & Calvert, 2010). Between 2010 and 2020, the employment of nursing aides is expected to grow by 20%. This increase is larger than the average (14%) for all occupations (U.S Department of Labor [USDOL], Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2012).

It is imperative to realize that when locating a secure living environment for the elderly ; the heart of the facility lies within the kitchen . The picture that I envision for myself is possibly working as a director of services for one of the retirement homes in my area. I am currently applying for areas of sales and service. I cannot completely run or manage a retirement or nursing home with the proper licensing in my state. By moving into a center at this level I can learn some of the aspects of the business before I get the necessary licenses or certifications.

To volunteer with the University of California, Los Angeles Health Department would be an ideal setting given that this experience would allow for personal growth and advancement. Expanding my horizon wherever possible is the objective and that is apparent in continuing knowledge through college. However, there is not an importance on the location seeing that acquiring and developing practice as well as exposure has more importance. Regardless, if I am presented with an opportunity to explore my career path in a respected facility I will not pass up the occasion. A career trajectory is a formalized plan for a successful transition into a career path that an individual has chosen. Likewise, the goal of nursing is to improve health through the advancement of knowledge therefore, improving the safety, effectiveness, and the access for healthcare. In combining these two definitions, a career trajectory in nursing advancement is to allow for clarity of direction and expected outcomes in a career by meeting the goals to advance in the healthcare field. In order to build a successful career as an advanced practitioner an individual must consider the requirements of the position and make strategic decisions in order to facilitate progression towards this goal (Feetham & Doering, 2015).

To graduate with a masters in nurse practitioning at McNeese University, all students will have to at least 40-43 credit hours in the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty, at least 46-49 hours spent in the Family/Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialty, no less than 34-37 hours spent for the Nurse Educator role, a minimum of 35-38 hours spent in the Nurse Executive role, complete a scholarly thesis project, and lastly, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA at all times (Graduate Programs) #5. The requirements don’t sound very hard to complete, and since my GPA in high school is a 4.0 it will be easy maintaining that grade point average in college.
