Would you stand up for what is right, even if you knew that you could lose your very life in doing so? I would like to think I would --- In memory of Eric Garner, who did, and lost his very life. --- The song above was put together by Eric's family.

this blog post is based entirely on that article. I picked Eric Garner, because he is labeled the first obviously, senseless, and unnecessary death in what appears to be a rash of black deaths at the hands of the police, in the last couple of years.
On July 17, 2014 Mr. Garner had just come from eating lunch with a 23-year-old friend, Ramsey Orta, when a scuffle broke out in front of them on Bay Street. One man accused another, known locally as Twin, of talking
On July 17th of last year Eric Garner was stopped by the police to be confronted about selling untaxed loose cigarettes illegally. Eric Garner verbally resisted arrest by arguing with the cops about the terms of his arrest. After bickering for a few minutes the cops proceed to perform a chokehold like maneuver, which acted as a catalyst toward the imminent death that would come of Garner. Prior to Garner’s encounter with Daniel Pantaleo his aggressor and rest of the NYPD cops, he already had several health issues such as diabetes and asthma. Consequently, this sparked a powder key of mammoth proportions, with outbreaks of destructive riots and protests. Furthermore, two notable contrasting interpretations of this controversial case are those
On Saturday, Eric Garner’s mother spoke to the thousands of demonstrators who took the streets in protest to Garner’s unlawful death, she said, “Keep on doing it, but do it in peace.” Garner was a New York shop owner, known for illegally selling cigarettes. Daniel Pantelo, the officer responsible for locking Garner in the choke hold, responded to a 911 call about Garner illegally selling cigarettes once again. Officer Pantelo pulled Garner into a choke hold after refusing to talk with Pantelo and his colleagues. Garner pleaded,
Eric Garner knew he did not do anything wrong. Eric and the other officers continues their dispute until one of the officers named Daniel Pantaleo took action. Daniel Pantaleo had put Eric in a choke hold and forced him onto the ground. “It also shows a cluster of officers, including Pantaleo, kneeling on Garner’s back and pressing his face, mouth and nose to the pavement as he lay face down, hands cuffed behind him, pleading— at least 11 times—“I can’t breathe.” (In these times 1) Eric continued to struggle until his body stopped moving. The officers took another look at him and saw that he was unconscious. They called the paramedics and they arrived shortly. The paramedics had brought Eric to the hospital where they announced that Eric had
What were the historical impacts that the artifacts and the mummy of King Tutankhamen had on archeology and society? This research is conducted over the impacts of the treasures in King Tutankhamun’s tomb, archeological findings on the walls that alter historical context and assumptions, a deeper understanding on the reign of Tut himself and his great excursions, and the autopsy of the mummified King. There will also be an overview of the effects this discovery had on culture and society soon after its discovery, and a brief discussion over the tomb. A primary source being evaluated for research is the book Egyptomania by Bob Brier which explained what sort of cultural impacts the discovery had on the tomb, the society craze towards it, and the industrial response set by corporations. A secondary source is the novel Tutankhamen: The Search For An Egyptian King by Joyce Tyldesley which analyzes all aspects on the discovery of King Tut including his life, his death, and his autopsy.
This article started out as a post on Facebook, where I openly expressed my pain and frustration surrounding the death of Sandra Bland, and the possibility that the black community has some culpability in her demise. I felt the need to share it on a broader platform, while expanding on the concept on which I make my claim. Let’s discuss, with veracity, what happened to Sandra Bland.
On 9/22/17, the Phase II inspection was performed at the Naples Pier to evaluate the structural condition of the areas west of Bent 38. This report summarized the issues that were found for these areas, provided a possible explanation for the damages incurred given the information available, and discussed possible damage mitigation features that could help to preserve the pier from future hurricane induced damages. All repairs must be completed prior to reopening the Phase II area to the public. Damage mitigation features should be implemented at the same time as the repairs in order to save time and money.
This article was basically about the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO by a white police officer named, Darren Wilson. The death of Michael Brown led to violent protests which lasted for weeks. Several weeks later, the officer who was responsible for the death of Ferguson teenage, Michael Brown, was not indicted by the Grand Jury of Ferguson. Shortly, there was an uproar ad more protests broke out across the state of Missouri and the United States as a whole.
According to, my research Eric Garner was not a violent man, therefore I saw no evidence to support the U.S News’ defintion of a violent altercation. Eric Garner was a forty three year old, asthmatic African American male with a beautiful wife and six children including a three month old child who loved him dearly. Mr.Garner was under the suspicion of selling loose and untaxed cigarettes. Mr.Garner’s friend who was recording the whole incident stated “He just broke up a fight”.
On July 17th, 2014, Garner was arrested on suspicion of selling “loosies”, single cigarettes from packs without tax stamps. The incident was captured on video tape and made publicly available shortly after and went viral. In the footage, the asthmatic, three-hundred-fifty pound Eric Garner was put into an apparent chokehold in an effort to subdue him after he told the arresting officers that he “was tired of being harassed” and refused to comply with their orders. In the footage audio Garner can be heard exclaiming “I can’t breathe” eleven times before the chokehold is released. Garner had to be hospitalized immediately, and was pronounced dead less than an hour after the incident. Garner’s death was ruled a homicide and the officer responsible
Mama and Ruth are African American women who both play an important role in A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry. They didn’t have much because they were black, and the society was racist. They were around many times and just like mama, Ruth has been a part of the main conflict. Ruth is important because she always has a problem and constantly makes smart remarks towards a certain character. She’s also pregnant and decides to get an abortion without asking he husband how he feels.
On my way into high school, I began to flourish mentally. I already knew who I was as a person and who I wanted to become. My environment, although it was negative, is what truly turned me into the person I remain today and the person I happen to be. The America we live in today still has some growing up to do. My eyes began to open the in the summer of 2012.My family decided to take a trip to Florida in the middle or racial mayhem. The Trayvon Martin case ravaged Florida and it seemed like every television channel and radio station was broadcasting some part of it. Street posts clasped in “Justice for Trayvon” posters and calls for George Zimmerman, his killer, to be jailed for racial profiling him and murdering the 17 year old. My child like
The first case of police brutality is the case of Eric Garner, and the infamous chokehold that resulted in his death. Only July seventeenth, of 2014, in New York City, Garner was suspected of selling cigarettes without tax stamps. When one of several officers at the scene, named Daniel Pantaleo took Garner’s wrists behind his back, he tried to push them away, this being resisting arrest. After this, Pantaleo put his arms around Garner’s neck, and pushed him to the ground, his hands on his heads. While in the chokehold, Garner attempted to say, “I can’t breathe!,” over ten times. The chokehold was revealed to be the partial cause of his death at the autopsy. Garner was 43 years old when he died. This is evidence that police brutality is clearly in existence. It is also clearly an injustice, since there were no charges in the case. The grand jury found "no reasonable cause" to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo.
Eric Garner still claiming not being able to breathe. This officer was not found guilty to the death of Eric Garner. “Studies show that police disproportionately use improper and deadly force on black men” (Desmond). Knowing that this is a fact and this officer not getting charged outrageous. With the recent Presidential election, you would think that people would vote for someone who would try to end this but the new President has no intentions of ending this
Since the death of Trayvon Martin who was shot by in 2012 by George Zimmerman a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida. There have been numerous of killings of African Americans. Most of these killings were posted on social media. Michael Brown 18 was unarmed went he was killed by Ferguson police officers August of 2014. Prior to Brown’s death, Eric Garner was killed after being placed in a chokehold by a New York City police officer. Mr. Garner was killed for selling loose cigarettes. The officers who put Garner in the chokehold was never charged. August 2014 Ezell Ford 25 years old mentally ill man was shot and killed in Florence California he was
Excessive force and police brutality have become common terms for anyone keeping up with today’s current events. In 2014, the media covered numerous cases of excessive force that resulted in the deaths of several people of color (Nelson & Staff, 2014). The most widely covered cases by the media in 2014 were of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old black male shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri; and Eric Garner, a 43-year-old black male in Staten Island, New York who was put into a choke by police officer Daniel Pantaleo until he lost consciousness and stopped breathing (Nelson & Staff, 2014). These cases brought attention to the seriousness of police brutality and the curiosity of how often it occurs (Brown, 2015).
