Throughout the duration of the film, John Nash appears to have a series of positive symptoms. According to King, positive symptoms “reflect something added above and beyond normal behavior”. This generalization is clearly evident in A Beautiful Mind. The most visible symptom that can be seen in John Nash’s behavior is his psychomotor movements. King states that “a person with schizophrenia may show unusual mannerisms, body movements, and facial expressions”. In the film, John Nash demonstrates these movements through
Mental illness affects us more than we know, in fact, about one in four Americans have a mental health disorder in any given year, and about half of all Americans will develop a mental illness sometime in their lives. Mental health disorders are usually caused by the interaction of chemicals in the Central Nervous System, which means that they can’t be prevented, but they are treatable. The effects of a mental illness can change a person’s life forever, which is why it is important to seek treatment for a mental illness right away. Schizoid Personality Disorder is part of the Cluster A or eccentric personality disorders, along with schizotypal and paranoid personality disorders.
In the film “ A Beautiful Mind” John Nash experiences a few different positive symptoms. The first of these positive symptoms are seen through the hallucinations John has of having a room -mate while at Princeton. This room- mate continues to stay “in contact” with John through out his adult life and later this room- mate’s niece enters Johns mind as another coinciding hallucination. Nash’s other hallucination is Ed Harris, who plays a government agent that seeks out Nash’s intelligence in the field of code- breaking.
First, schizophrenia is a severe, chronic and disabling brain disorder that has affected people for some time. The term schizophrenia itself means “fragmented mind”. Even though men tend to receive diagnosis more than women, in this film a women is seen portraying the individual with schizophrenia. It is usually first diagnosed in a person’s late teens or early twenties, as displayed in the
The movie, A Beautiful Mind was inspired by a novel about John Nash Jr. that shared the same name. John Nash Jr. was a famous mathematician who taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University. After graduating from Princeton, he quickly gained recognition in the field of mathematics where he won a Nobel Prize in economics, as well as articulating a myriad of mathematical proofs and theories. Nash had been experiencing delusions and auditory hallucinations that led him to believe he was working for the pentagon to identify undercover-Soviet communication in the media. After his wife started noticing erratic behavior she forced him to go to a psychiatric hospital. His trip to the psychiatric hospital ended with him having

A Beautiful Mind John Nash’s type of schizophrenia is paranoid schizophrenic. This condition is a common chronic mental disorder in which a person loses touch with reality. This movie made me realize the difficulties a schizophrenic patient experiences on a daily basis. Affected people do not realize they have schizophrenia until signs become more severe such as the inability to distinguish between what is real and what isn’t. At first, I thought the patient was going to be diagnosed immediately when people
This was a perfect example of the psychological disorder schizophrenia. Although, each person with the disorder differs in type of symptoms and intensity of symptoms, John Nash is a perfect example of a severe case, as well as the capability of the human mind to overcome this disorder. We briefly discussed psychological disorders during our Neuroscience and Brain unit in class. This movie provided a good display of schizophrenia and taught me new information that we weren't able to cover. Each psychological disorder is different and each brain differentiates with the capability of with dealing with them. In the end, John Nash was able to overcome his symptoms and settle down. He continued to pursue mathematics and had a family. His wife stuck with him during the lowest points and raised two children
Just like in reality, this movie does not identify any causal factors associated with schizophrenia, but its treatment and management are portrayed to work effectively with antipsychotic/ psychotropic medications and Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that makes the affected individual “to understand and appreciate his condition” (A beautiful Mind). Several inaccurate characterizations of schizophrenia in this movie relates to the fact that this condition does not affect males only but also females are affected, and apart from the positive symptoms of schizophrenia that are highlighted, the patient may also exhibit negative symptoms. It is also not advisable to keep or incarcerate the affected individuals in the hospital since the condition can easily be managed at home with adequate contribution of the family members (A beautiful Mind).
