Car safety has improved tremendously since the 1900s. Car safety was never a big concern until more and more people were getting injured or killed in automobile accidents. In 2012, frontal airbags saved 2,213 lives, according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Seatbelts weren’t required to be used, unlike today, which you can be fined for not wearing a seatbelt. Many incidents were starting to happen during the 1910s when driving, including speeding, collisions, and overall clumsy driving. Mankind started to notice the danger of driving, and wanted to make driving more safe. Inventors started to come up with safety devices, and that was how car safety was born. Some inventions that were made to make driving more safe, “Benjamin Katz invents the world’s first head rest for cars… reduce the severity of …show more content…
According to the NHTSA, “More than 15,000 lives are saved each year in the United States…” (Seatbelts - Saving Thousands of Lives). Seatbelts are saving many lives. Without seat belts, that would be about 15,000 lives lost. Just one invention saved 15,000 lives in a year. “In 1967, carmaker Mercedes-Benz started to develop airbags for its vehicles. Two developments prompted that move: the rapid increase of accidents during the 1960s, and a new federal law that mandated ‘automatic occupant protection systems’ for every car in the USA starting in 1969”(McCormick 1). Making a law that mandated ‘automatic occupant protection systems’ for every car in the USA was a major improvement. Automatic occupant protection systems are functions like airbags, automatic braking, functions that the car will activate itself. This can help before crash, as if you are driving at another car, the automatic brake system can kick in an tremendously slow your car down before impact, thus causing less
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “in 2015, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 13,941 lives” (1). The NHTSA goes on to say that almost 30 million Americans still don’t use seat belts on a daily basis. Since vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of death in the United States and even the world, the argument to improve seat belt technology has increased dramatically. Researchers are often more concerned with whether or not people are wearing their seat belts, not the effectiveness of them, until now, although both are incredibly important. Seat belt safety, which is directly related to seat belt technology, has been shown to be increasingly ineffective because of the high severity
These vehicles gave people greater freedom; they could finally live outside cities and could drive to work, run errands, and go on vacation. The growing accessibility to automobiles during the 1920s led to greater mobility and a booming economy, but this newfound freedom, along with very limited regulations on driving, led to many automobile accidents and deaths. In the
Cars During the 1920s One of the most important parts of our daily life is the car. The twenties was a time when automobiles were becoming more like the cars we see everyday. Many things that are essential to cars were invented during the twenties. This essay will cover car industry facts, Henry Ford, and car improvements during the twenties.
The known inventions in the 1920’s were the radio, automobiles, the assembly line and TV. “The era sprang into being with the introduction of commercial radio and the birth of jazz music, a creation of African Americans that quickly became popular among middle-class white Americans” (“The Jazz Age”). The automobile was the greatest invention. “The auto industry provided progressively easier and faster traveling and shipping, and it spurred the development of elaborate highway systems linking cities and states. It also stimulated the creation of suburbs around major cities” (“The Automobile Industry”). The only concern with the automobile was everyone's safety. Some cars did have safety features and insured customers would be safe driving the vehicle, but accidents happen and cars sometimes fail in keeping the person from being hurt. “The automobile is also a significant health hazard, both directly and indirectly. According to the United Nations, over a million people (both vehicle occupants and pedestrians) die every year on the world’s roads” (Cohen). When someone owned a car, people thought highly of them because they had the money to afford it. Although wealthy people were known for having a car, cars were not expensive. Everyone but the poor could just about afford an automobile. The automobile was more helpful than driving people places. “The automobile sparked the development of other
Automobiles of the 1920’s are more than just automobiles of the 1920’s there is so much more to it. Automobiles created new opportunities for the 1920’s. Road construction companies had a big advantage on the 1920’s. Laws had to come into effect as more and more automobiles was manufactured. An Act was put into place called the Federal Highway Act of 1921.
A recent multi-vehicle accident in Rutherford County is a reminder of the importance of using seatbelts. A 27-year-old woman was driving eastbound on State Route 840 West when her vehicle ran off the road. She overcorrected and crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with another vehicle. The 27-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and hit by a third vehicle. Both the 27-year-old woman and the driver of the second vehicle died from injuries sustained in the crash. Neither was wearing a seat belt, which, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol, would have made a difference in the crash.
Every day, thousands of individuals fall victim to motor vehicle accidents and obtain serious injuries. But in regards to innovations such as seat belts and airbags, this number has decreased. Safety innovations have changed throughout history. In the 1930’s, individuals were required to wear safety glasses in their vehicles, in the late 1950’s, occupants were allowed to choose whether they wanted headrests on the front seats, which we know understand to be a crucial part of a car as it prevents whiplash. More recently there have been new innovations such as tire pressure monitors and traction control which further contributes to reducing the number of roadside accidents. However, it is clear that there is still a large area for improvement.
Lead (attention grabber/WOW statement) On an average about 7,000 lives are saved each year by seat belts and in nine years about 320,000 people have died but 55% could have been saved if they were wearing a seatbelt. ( ). Background information Janis was driving to the mall to buy Jimmy her 6 year son some new toys. Janis thought her seat belt was uncomfortable so she did not wear her seat belt.
It would be useful to understand exactly what a seat belt does in order to save lives. Seat belts work to stop the person from hitting other parts of the car during collision. A person traveling in a car traveling at 15 miles per hour is also traveling at the same speed. If the car was to stop suddenly (as in case of a collision), the person would still be moving inside the car and will continue to move until something (the steering wheel, dashboard, windshield) stops him/her. A person traveling at 30 miles per hour would hit these objects in the same manner as he/she would have hit the pavement falling from a 3-story
The main finding is that installation of air-bags significantly reduces fatalities. The reduced percentage of driver fatalities is estimated to be 29 percent in frontal crashes and this number increases to 32 percent for front seat passengers at least 13 years of age, for this age group, the fatality reduction is 13.5 percent. For drivers not using seat-belts, the airbag fatality reduction is 21% while it was estimated to be 34% in case of drivers using seat-belts as well. Of the previously mentioned 28,000 people whose lives were saved due to airbags, 82% were drivers and the residual were
Judge Oliver ruled that, sincethe belts contributed to public safety, they could not be considered unconstitutional.consequently, People think that wearing a seatbelt or not, it doesn’t change the numberof casualties from wrecks but let me tell you why that’s not true. Despite the best effortsof law enforcement and others to educate people about the importance and benefits ofwearing a seatbelt, many still do not.(Hurst). According to the Center for DiseaseControl wearing a seatbelt is the most efficient way to save lives and reduce injuries incar crashes. Considering car crashes are the leading cause of death among thosebetween the ages of 5 and 34, you could say wearing a seat belt is the most
Among drivers and front-seat passengers, seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45%, and cut the risk of serious injury by 50%. Seat belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected during a crash. " www.cdc.gov. There are many more valid reasons to always wear your seat belt than to not wear it. When asking some adults in my family if they require passengers to wear their seat belt, they all said yes.
The Middle East is a place full of beautiful culture. The beauty of the Middle East has been overshadowed by the violence. They have had to deal with civil wars, religious wars, colonization, identify issues and creation of new countries.
For the people who use the excuse that "They are just going around the corner" should realize that 80% of traffic fatalities occur within a 25-mile radius of your home and at a speed of 40 miles an hour. Buckling up to drive around the block is probably the best time to do so. Everyone knows that car crashes can cause death; yet because people do not buckle up all the time thousands of people still die in traffic crashes yearly. Seatbelts can save your life in a crash and can reduce your risk of a serious injury. Seat belts keep drivers and passengers from being ejected through windows or doors. This is important because your chances of being killed are five times greater if you are thrown from the vehicle. Thousands of people who die in car crashes each year might still be alive today if they had only been wearing their seat belts.
Seat belts although they are the most effective safety device on cars must be made safer. Out of all people who died in car accidents, 63% of those were not wearing seat belts (seatbelts). This goes to show you the effectiveness of seat belt. Therefore automotive manufactures must mandate the installation of 5-point seatbelt on all cars. In all major race car organization such as NASCAR (National Association Stock Car Automotive Racing) they require these 5-point seat belt. Which is nothing more than a seatbelt that is buckled in 5 spots rather that the conventional 3.
