MGT301A: Ethics and Sustainability
Part 1: Scenario about Ethical Dilemma
In my line of work, I had to choose whether to give a worker a pay boost that exceeded
the company's compensation guidelines. Since weighing the employee's and the company's
interests and determining whether it was ethically permissible to depart from existing policies
needed ethical considerations, this choice involved both. Due to concerns regarding fairness,
justice, and the company's duty to its employees, the decision entailed ethical considerations. On
the one hand, the employee had a solid background and contributed significantly to the business,
which is a justification for awarding the pay increase. On the other hand, the organization had
established standards for pay increases that must be adhered to, which is a duty to uphold
uniformity and fairness among all employees. The choice also sparked concerns about the
company's aims and morals. The decision to increase the salary may be morally justifiable if the
corporation values its workers and their efforts. However, if the business prioritized sound
financial management and attention to rules, going against the grain might be viewed as
immoral.
Part 2: A reflection
Before deciding on this course of action. I considered giving the worker a bonus instead
of a wage raise and considered other payment options, including adding more holiday leave or
other benefits (Paliwal, 2006). Ultimately, I decided to follow corporate policies and not
transgress from the pay ranges. I thought about the repercussions of providing the employee a
pay boost in defiance of the company's rules, including the potential to create an environment
that would encourage other workers to request pay raises in defiance of the company's standards
(McCartney, 2015). Also, I was interested in ensuring that I was fair and was not favoring any
particular employee. I also considered the employee's value to the company, their background,
and the necessity of policy observance (Maddux et al., 2010). If the same situation occurred
repeatedly, I would follow the same course of action, considering the employee's value and merit
and the company's financial obligations and policies. I would handle similar requests similarly in
the future and be clear about the firm's standards and expectations.
Part 3: Ethical Framework
A useful tool for moral thinking and ethical judgment is reflective practice. People can
benefit from critically analyzing their own values, assumptions, and beliefs as well as from
taking other people's perspectives into account. Individuals can improve their ethical reasoning
abilities and obtain a greater knowledge of the intricacies of ethical decision-making by
meditating on ethical topics and dilemmas
(Gibbs, 1988, as cited in Jasper, 2013). Six stages
make up the Gibbs Reflective Cycle: description, feelings, assessment, analysis, conclusion, and
action plan. This framework enables people to think back on their experiences and feelings,
analyze the issue, assess their behavior, and make plans for the future. I decided not to give the
worker a raise outside of the pay range in this case, in accordance with company policy since I
had to analyse the situation and assess if it is the right one to do
(Gibbs, 1988, as cited in Jasper,
2013).
The moral philosophy of utilitarianism best describes how I resolved my ethical dilemma
at work. Utilitarianism holds that the moral choice is the one that has the most positive impact on
the most significant number of people. I decided not to give the worker a raise outside of the pay
range in this case, in accordance with company policy. This decision preserved the greatest good
