DISCUSSION FORUM UNIT 1
Give a personal example of where you’ve seen or experienced each of the basic schools
of thoughts for Philosophy.
This week, we have studied pragmatism, positivism, and realism as the three main
schools of philosophy. A philosophical approach to objects that emphasizes the logical
reaction is known as pragmatism. Pragmatists believe that only things that can be seen
or experienced are genuine. They thought that rather than judging philosophical
concepts based on abstractions, they should evaluate them based on their "practical
uses and successes" (Cline, 2020, Para. 1). I can give you a personal example from my
time spent seeking for housing. I had a lot of options when it came to the city I could
live in, but I ended up choosing my current residence not because it was superior to
other options, but rather because I was unable to pay for the more desirable ones.
Positive thinking, on the other hand, is a state of certainty or confidence in oneself. I
can offer my own example: I think there is a God. Finally, realists hold that reality is an
independent construct of the human mind. The body is the main subject (Lebow, 2008).
Realistically speaking, I don't believe what other people say until I independently
confirm it. For example, I disagree with a friend of mine who believes that bad things
always happen someone hits his toes against a stone.
Which of the three basic schools of Philosophy is most in line with your decision
processes on a day-to-day basis? Why?
The fundamental school of thinking that aligns with my decision-making is realism. I
don't merely follow people's opinions in life; it also relies on the circumstances.
However, the majority of the time I deal with things practically and perceive them as
they are. I take things at face value—that is, as they are, not merely concepts. For
realism entails both sincerity and reasoned thought.
Include a bullet or two about the ‘value’ of these schools of thought in everyday
The three fundamental philosophical systems are immensely helpful in day-to-day
living. They support us in thinking critically, resolving personal issues, and making wiser
choices in daily life.
