AE 498 Assignment 3 Due Thursday, November 16 th For the following problems, you will use the Argonne GREET software to estimate the environmental emissions of various scenarios. Version 14024 was used to write this homework, and is available here: https://greet.anl.gov/index.php?content=greetdotnet Problem 1a. Using GREET’s default production pathways for well-to-pump liquid hydrogen production at a centralized plant, fill out the following information for the production of 1,000 kg of liquid hydrogen. Pay attention to your units. Method PEM Electrolysis (Hydro) Natural Gas Total CO2, kg PM 2.5, g Total energy, MJ Total water use, m^3 GHG-20, kg Problem 1b. Consider the differences in emissions between the two production pathways. Provide at least two environmental reasons an engineer may choose to generate liquid hydrogen using natural gas. Problem 2a. Now let’s estimate the production emissions of Fischer-Tropsch jet fuel from biomass. However, we’re going to make some changes to the pathways of GREET. These are: 1. Change the composition of the selected pathway mix from forest residue to 100 % corn stover for ethanol plant. 2. Assume only pipelines are used to move the jet fuel 800 miles from the plant to the bulk terminal. Leave urban share and electricity as they are. 3. Assume trucks still move fuel from the bulk terminal to the refueling station, but assume fuel efficiency to and from as a flat 12 miles/gallon. Once these steps are complete, fill out the table below for 902,703 MJ of FT jet fuel, the amount needed for a Boeing 737-800 to fly its maximum range. Total CO2, tons PM 2.5, g Total energy, MJ Total water use, m^3 GHG-20, tons Problem 2b. The amount of water use is low. Why is this? What assumption is GREET making such that biomass jet fuel appears to have low water usage?
