Question 1: Calculate the number of vacancies per cm3 in FCC nickel at 900°C. The atomic radius is 0.125 nm and the activation energy is 20,000 cal/mol. - A non-cold-worked brass specimen of average grain size 0.008 mm has a yield strength of 160 MPa. Estimate the yield strength of this alloy after it has been heated to 600 C for 1000 s, if it is known that the average grain size of a brass material is about 0.020 mm and the value of ky is 12.0 MPa-mm1/2. Question 3- Examine the following microstructures and conditions of annealed cartridge brass (70Cu- 30Zn) and answer to the questions below. a) Explain why the grain size is larger in the sample annealed for longer time. Grain size is dependent on time and temperature and since both have the same percentage of cold work and temperature, the sample annealed for longer has a larger grain size. b) Which one of the recrystallized samples above have higher strength? Why? The annealed brass + 50% cold work has higher strength because cold work increases the strength of a material. The other two samples were recrystallized which increased their ductility at the cost of losing tensile strength. Examine the following microstructures of annealed cartridge brass (70Cu-30Zn) at different temperature. c) Explain why the grain size is larger in the sample annealed at higher temperature. Grain size is dependent on time and temperature and since both have the same percentage of cold work and recrystallization time, the sample recrystalized at the highest temperature will have the larger grain size. d) Which one of the recrystallized samples above have higher strength? Why? Question 4 - A cylindrical rod of copper originally 16.0 mm in diameter is to be cold worked by drawing; the circular cross section will be maintained during deformation. A cold-worked yield strength in excess of 250 MPa and a ductility of at least 12%EL are desired. Furthermore, the final diameter must be 11.3 mm. Explain how this may be accomplished. Hint: refer to Figure below.
Question 5 - Calculate the temperature for a cold worked aluminum alloy at which complete recrystallization occurs in 1 hour if the activation energy for the process is 208.54 kJ/mole?
