Overall Scenario:
On a mobility mission, your unit approaches a tunnel. Before you can send your forces to travel through the tunnel, a tunnel reconnaissance must be completed to identify essential information to ensure smooth traffic flow through the tunnel. You are responsible for collecting the tunnel serial number, location, type, length, width (including sidewalks), bypasses, alignment, gradient, and cross section information. In addition to conducting the reconnaissance, you must prepare a tunnel overlay symbol and complete and submit DD Form 3012.
Conduct a Tunnel Reconnaissance Overview:
A tunnel reconnaissance is typically conducted as part of a route or road classification or to
support general engineer activities. The information collected during the reconnaissance is used to complete DD Form 3012, and to prepare an overlay symbol identifying the limiting characteristics. Combat Engineer Squad Leaders are responsible for conducting the reconnaissance.
Tunnel Reconnaissance Activities:
Collect tunnel reconnaissance data
Prepare DD Form 3012
Prepare tunnel overlay symbol

Question 1
10 out of 10 points
Activity 1:
Collect tunnel reconnaissance data.
Scenario:
Tunnel reconnaissance involves determining essential information about the tunnel. Your first task is to collect the critical dimensions of the tunnel.
Task 1
: Before beginning to collect the tunnel data, you need to demonstrate your understanding of which critical dimensions are required during tunnel reconnaissance. Which measurement is taken at the datapoint labeled with a 4 (the vertical line from the base to the top of the tunnel)?
Selected Answer:
c.
Overhead Clearance
Response Feedback:
Correct. Nice work, SSG. The vertical line from the base to the top of the tunnel measures the overhead clearance.
Question 2
10 out of 10 points
Task 2
: Which type of tunnel shape is represented in this image?
Selected Answer:
c.
Horseshoe
Response Feedback:
Correct. Nice work, SSG. This image shows a horseshoe-
shaped tunnel.
Question 3
10 out of 10 points
Task 3
: What is the overhead clearance of the tunnel shown below?
Selected Answer:
a.
9 ft
Response Feedback:
Correct. Nice work, SSG. The overhead clearance, which measures the minimum distance between the top of the traveled-way and the lower edge of the tunnel ceiling, is 9 ft.
Question 4
0 out of 10 points
Task 4
: The critical dimensions of the tunnel have been recorded, but there is still additional data you
need. From the list below, select the additional data you must collect.
Selected Answers:
b.
Tunnel curvature
d.
Condition of rock or soil
Response Feedback:
Incorrect. The correct answers are now displayed. It is recommended
that you review the information about tunnel reconnaissance data to reinforce your knowledge of this topic.
Question 5
10 out of 10 points
Activity 2
:
Prepare and submit DD Form 3012.
Scenario
: With the information collected during the reconnaissance, you are now ready to complete DD Form 3012. Use the information collected to complete the indicated sections of DD Form 3012. If you need assistance recalling any of the tunnel data, Select the notebook icon at the bottom of the screen to pull up the field notes your unit recorded while conducting the bridge reconnaissance.
Task 1:
Which of the following information would go in the header field of DD Form 3012 shown here?
Selected Answer:
a.
2020-08-01

Question 11
10 out of 10 points
Activity 3: Prepare the Tunnel Overlay Symbol
Scenario:
After the tunnel data has been collected and recorded onto DD Form 3012, the final step before submitting the form is to complete the tunnel overlay symbol identifying the tunnel limitations.
Task 1
: What information goes in the highlighted area of the tunnel overlay symbol?
Selected Answer:
b.
Tunnel number
Response Feedback:
Correct. Nice work, SSG. The highlighted section of the tunnel overlay symbol is used to record the tunnel number.
Question 12
10 out of 10 points
Task 2
: In the overlay symbol below, does the described tunnel include an easy or difficult bypass?
Selected Answer:
b.
Difficult
Response Feedback:
Correct. Nice work, SSG. The double-arrow line intersecting the tunnel is used to indicate if a tunnel can be bypassed. In this case, the tunnel has a difficult bypass, as indicated by the squiggly line. An easy bypass available as indicated by the straight line.
Question 13
10 out of 10 points
Task 3
: In the overlay symbol below, what is maximum overhead clearance?
Selected Answer:
b.
12 m
Response Feedback:
Correct. Nice work, SSG. The notation to the left of the bore shape indicates the overhead clearance using the format
minimum clearance/maximum clearance
. So in this case, the tunnel has a maximum clearance of 12 meters.
Question 14
10 out of 10 points
Task 4
: Select the correct description for the overlay symbol shown here.
Selected Answer:
c.
Tunnel Number 4 has an elliptical bore shape with a minimum overhead clearance of 6m and a maximum overhead clearance of 8m. It is 13m wide (15m including sidewalks) and 250m long on the traveled way. There is a difficult bypass available.
Response Feedback:
Correct. Nice work, SSG. You correctly identified the tunnel description based on the overlay symbol.
Question 15

Task 5
: You are performing a reconnaissance of an underpass with the following characteristics:
Underpass Number 1 can be described as a rectangular shaped underpass with sidewalks, with a traveled-way width of 18-meters, and a total width (with sidewalks) of 22-meters. The underpass has an overhead clearance of 8-meters.
Complete the overlay symbol given this information.
What information goes in the area on the left side of the underpass symbol?
[a]
What information goes in the area on the right side?
[b]
Specified Answer for: a
width
Specified Answer for: b
overhead clearance
Response Feedback:
Incorrect. The correct answer is now displayed. It is recommended that you review the underpass overlay symbol to reinforce your knowledge of this topic.

You are an engineer working on a project and your prototype has failed prematurely. You question whether or not a key component of the prototype was manufactured with the correct material. There are two way to check for the material properties. The first way is to have a material certification done to confirm the exact material composition. This will take some time. The second method to confirm the material properties is to make an ASTM test sample and test for the material properties. This tensile test was completed on a test sample with an initial diameter of .501” and an initial length of 2”. The Load-Deflection data for this tensile test is below. Use this data to answer the first set of questions on the Final Exam in eLearning. A. Determine the Ultimate Tensile Strength B. Determine the 0.2% Offset Yield Strength C. Determine the value of the Proportional Limit D. Determine the Modulus of Elasticity E. Determine the Strain at Yield F. Calculate %…

At an intersection car B was traveling south and car A was traveling 30° north of east when they slammed into each other.
Upon investigation, it was found that after the crash, the two cars got stuck and skidded off at an angle of 10° north of east.
Each driver claimed that he was going at the speed limit of 50 km/h and that he tried to slow down, but couldn't avoid the
