NUMBER:
3.0C/100
ISSUED:
September 1977
REVISED:
PRODUCT:
Centaur
MODEL(S):
Generator
Specifics:
GS 4000 with AC Electric Fuel Pump
SUBJECT: RETROFIT OF LIQUID FUEL SYSTEM
PRODUCT SAFETY
Type of Change:
Product Safety, Campaign Retrofit
Recommended
Compliance:
Immediate
Purpose:
This Bulletin announces a potentially dangerous condition which exists in the fuel system on the
above units and the procedure necessary to correct the problem. The changes suggested here are of
a mandatory nature.
Accomplishment of this Service Bulletin by Solar Service Representatives requires notice by owner
as to date and time of equipment availability.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
High vibration levels have been experienced on the 1/2-inch rigid metal tubing fuel lines between
the AC electric-motor driven main fuel pump and the fuel control.
To reduce the vibration and prevent possible fuel line failure, the fuel pump electrical control circuit
will be revised to re-sequence the turn on point of the AC motor driven fuel pump. The rigid fuel line

will be replaced with special high temperature resistant flexible lines. After these two modifications
have been completed, normal operations can be resumed. Subsequent to these modifications, the
existing AC motors will be retrofitted with an improved model which incorporates a stronger cast
iron case. This is an additional requirement which is felt to be necessary to insure that safe vibration
levels are maintained in this system.
The AC motor retrofit will occur at a later date because of lead time to procure the motors, and will
be subject to further notification.
ACTION REQUIRED:
Contact your local Solar Power Support district office for an appointment to have the first part of
this retrofit completed. An appointment for the second part of the retrofit of the AC motor will be
arranged by your Solar district Power Support office at a later date when parts are available.
Enclosed are instructions with illustrations which should be used when future maintenance is per-
formed on the packages. Insert these pages in your OMI under fuel system and use them whenever
maintenance on the lines is required.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE, HIGH TEMPERATURE FLEXIBLE FUEL
LINES (SEE FIGURE 1 AND FIGURE 2)
(This procedure, derived from Service Bulletin No. 3.0C/100, which replaced rigid fuel lines with
flexible lines, replaces the existing procedure in the Operation and Maintenance instructions for the
generator set.)
1.
Install 90-degree elbow, P/N 23607Rl on the discharge fitting of pump, and 90-degree
elbow, P/N 23920R1 on the inlet fitting of the fuel control.
THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP. IF THE FUEL LINE IS NOT POSITIONED
AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2 AND EXCESSIVE PRELOAD IS ALLOWED TO
BE APPLIED TO THE 90-DEGREE ELBOW IT MAY CAUSE FAILURE OF
THIS PART.
2.
Position the 90-degree elbow as shown in Figure 1 so that no preloading is applied to
the fitting.

ENSURE THAT LINES ARE PLACED SO THAT NO CHAFING CAN OC-
CUR BETWEEN THE LINES AND ANY OBJECT ON THE PACKAGE.
3.
Install flexible lines (hoses). These are identical and can be used in either location.
4.
Lubricate and torque all the 1/2-inch fittings to 24-29 ft.-lb. (32.5 to 39.3 Nm).

Project 2: In company that designs road cars and heavy trucks, it important to make the proper selection of the engines. Your part as a system energy engineer is to make a proper selection between an engine operates on Otto cycle/gasoline engine or Diesel cycle/diesel engine. Your head of department asked you to provide a detailed technical report that shows your selection for engine to be used with heavy truck vehicle. This is best achieved by performing the following tasks: Section.1:
1. Which engine does operate at lower ??? and has higher air-fuel mass ratio?
2. Which engine does burn fuel more completely?
3. Which engine has lower fuel cost?
4. Explain what compression ratio for Otto and Diesel cycles means
5. Explain what cut-off ratio for Diesel cycles means
6. Explain the limitations of SI engines in terms of their ability to operate at much higher compression ratios. What is this limitation called?
7. Provide general plot(s) for thermal efficiency, ? vs compression ratio, r…

Question 2: (Power law and sizing function)
A company that produces high efficiency Fraction Horsepower DC motors. Started four years ago by producing
both of 0.20, and 0.35 HP motors at the cost of $15 and $20 for each respectively. At that time the relevant
Cost Index was 115. The company is currently considering the production of a 0.5 Horsepower motor of a
similar design, the current cost index is 150.
1. Estimate the cost of the 0.5 Horsepower motor using the power law and sizing function. (Hint:
Determine the value of index m first)
2. Estimate the cost if the company adds a speed Reducer Head to the motor at the current cost of 6:00

A Team of Engineers asked for an internal combustion engine to use it in a designed car. Your role is to describe the operation sequence of different types of available engines, explain their mechanical efficiency, and deliver a detailed technical report to show your approach in solving and discussing the following tasks and issues.
You must follow the following steps to help the team:
STEP 1
Describe the operational sequence of four-stroke spark ignition and four-stroke compression ignition engines with the aid of sketches by constructing simple sketch representing the operation and plotting the P-V diagrams for each process during the cycle to show the following:
The input and output heat and net output work
The air-fuel mixture intake and exhaust gasses
The spark plug when it is in the active mode
