4-1 Short Paper: Adapting the Project Approach to Meet Business Needs Southern New Hampshire University QSO 435 Adaptive Project Management Professor Blair McKenzie November 18, 2023 Agile Approach
Agile project management is an iterative methodology that was established in an effort to counter Waterfall's more rigid style (Hoory & Bottorff, 2022) . It prioritizes frequent updates and embraces feedback from consumers at every stage of the development process. Consisting of more than a dozen techniques, agile incorporates the cooperative efforts of self-organizing and cross-functional teams to promote rapid delivery,   adaptive scheduling, and a high degree of flexibility. Despite notable criticism, Agile maintains an incredibly successful project management approach. It is extremely   flexible, open to collaboration, customer-focused, and supports modifications at any point during the development process. It has also consistently proven to be more efficient at producing higher quality goods that fulfill the requirements and desires of the customer. Differences Between the Agile and Waterfall Agile Waterfall Small and midsize teams Large Teams Customer input allowed throughout project Customer output retrieved at milestones Iterative Sequential Unlimited Flexibility Limited Flexibility With there being a various amount of project management tools and strategies available for any project, we need to carefully   evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy and raise the following questions to ourselves: What kind of outcome are we   after? Can a small, seasoned team complete the project? Do we have to abide by a time and scope agreement? Is client input required at specific project stages or is it wanted continuously? Asking these
questions will typically guide us in the direction of whether agile or the waterfall method is more suitable to the project at hand. The waterfall project management approach also known as the traditional approach, follows a clear linear sequential formula, plan driven with little incorporation of feedback and improvement, resistant to change, and a team that’s compartmentalized by role. While the agile approach is the complete opposite. Throughout the development phases, this Agile process   collects continuous input and implements improvements. Its iterative approach also communicates the method's flexibility, adaptability, and cross-functional team culture. Agile’s Impact Anyone who has ever worked on a project knows how   to prepare for the unavoidable scope creep. Being one of the most common risks amongst project management, scope creep occurs when modifications are made to the project scope without following established protocols, such as change requests (Malsam, 2023). These modifications could jeopardize the successful completion of milestones and objectives and ultimately   have an impact on the project's budget, timeline, expenses, and utilization of resources (2023). Scope creep can be managed successfully through the implementation of Agile's driven approach. Teams that utilize the sprint method are flexible and able to tackle obstacles promptly. This is due to the fact that change is anticipated. Whereas the waterfall method practices a rigid structure with very limited flexibility once the projects start. Agile roles and responsibilities may shift depending upon whichever   framework   is being applied. Although the frameworks differ the common roles consist of product owner, scrum

master, and development team. The product owner is responsible for defining and prioritizing the product backlog while representing the consumer and end user. Facilitating the Agile process and ensuring that the team follows Agile principles and practices is the responsibility of the scrum who removes any obstacles or impediments that may hinder the team's progress. Last but not least the development team. They are responsible for designing, developing, and testing the product, as they collaborate closely with each other and with the Product Owner to deliver high- quality increments (Cobbs, 2015).
