1 5-1 Journal: Decision Factors in Using APM QSO-435 Adaptive Project Mgmt April 7, 2024
2 Adopting Agile Agile project management (APM) involves a more adaptive method of managing a project from an iterative and incremental approach. However, this project management approach is only fit for some projects. Short to medium project sizes or deadlines with APM can promote efficiency and productivity. The APM approach should also be considered when a project has a high level of ambiguity (Cobb, 2023). If the end goal requires additional clarification, there are multiple variations of the final product, or the project is anticipated to change directions, APM provides more flexibility by allowing changes to deploy in parallel with planned incremental releases. Lastly, since APM focuses on value, this approach should be used when a project calls for high engagement from business stakeholders. It incorporates a “collaboration-based approach on a spirit of trust and partnership (Cobb, 2022).” APM is a client-facing methodology that promotes a partnership with the business to share progress and welcome feedback, incorporating feedback received to deliver a value-driven product. Projects not Appropriate for Agile Agile is not appropriate for projects with fixed schedules and budgets. Since agile progresses iteratively and focuses on continuous improvement, it can impact changes to a project's cost, timeline, and scope (Cobb, 2023). A rigid project that decides to use APM risks delays with the project timelines and going over budget. It would be appropriate to use a traditional project management approach, known as waterfall, a more suitable approach for plan- driven projects with well-defined projects that can be done linearly and sequentially (Cobb, 2023). Projects with schedules and budget constraints are not appropriate for the APM approach.
