Good afternoon class,
The final week is here! In the next five years based off what we see gong on in the world today, I can only
imagine that the biggest threat would be the attacks and threats from the cyber world. The world is advancing at an incredible rate, and with that advancement so are our enemies. Everything we do in this life ether in our professions or our personal lives, technology is used in everything. I have been to a lot of
different training and briefings throughout the last year and cyber attacks are some of the biggest challenges we face. China is the biggest threat we have when it comes to cyber threats. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s 2023 Annual Threat Assessment makes clear the cyber threat posed by
the People’s Republic of China (PRC): “China probably currently represents the broadest, most active, and persistent cyber espionage threat to U.S. Government and private-sector networks. China’s cyber pursuits and its industry’s export of related technologies increase the threats of aggressive cyber operations against the U.S. homeland. . . China almost certainly is capable of launching cyber-attacks that
could disrupt critical infrastructure services within the United States, including against oil and gas pipelines, and rail systems." (CISA, 2023) China focuses on a tactic called Living off the land (LOTL) by using certain techniques to maintain anonymity to abuse tools already established in the environment. More recently in September 2023 U.S. and Japanese officials warn that Chinese state-sponsored hackers placed modifying software inside routers to target government industries and companies located in both
countries. The hackers use firmware implants to stay hidden and move around in their target’s networks.
Being on active duty, we have comm issues all the time and when that happens a lot of work comes to a screeching halt, because of the dependence of technology. In fighting these attacks, public and private sectors own and operate a vast majority of the nation’s critical Infrastructure and cyber networks. There are programs out there that assist in these efforts such as the Cybersecurity Partners Local Access Plans and having exercises that test the community’s response abilities. I wish everyone the best of luck in their future endeavors. Have a Happy New Year!!
