Student Guide for Practical Assessment
Overview of Assessment 1. This is a practical assessment carried out at the TAFE simulated work studio space. 2. Your assessor will observe you continually as time permits during designated session time.
3. You will be working individually.
Task/s to be assessed
This is an open book practical assessment. Your lecturer will provide you with 2 garments on mannequins. You will be required to
draw a technical drawing of each garment, annotate them (describe in writing), and perform a quality check.
The assessment will consist of the below tasks:
2.1 Prepare workstation
Your lecturer will observe you preparing your workstation and your ability to select appropriate tools.
2.2 Draw a women’s blouse / shirt
Your lecturer will place a Women’s Shirt / Blouse on the mannequin or pin on the board. You are to illustrate the shirt as a trade flat
with front and back views, in proportion, showing all construction detail. You must do this on the A3 specification sheet provided by your lecturer. You must use a black felt tip pen to finish your sketch.
2.3 Annotate a women’s blouse / shirt
Using your trade flat from 2.2, annotate the drawing by adding a descriptive title, labelling the design details, and suggesting a fabric option for the garment characterised by the style of your drawing. All writing must be neat and accurate. You
must made a minimum of 5 annotations.
2.4 Draw a pair of men’s jeans
Your lecturer will either place Men’s jeans on the board or provide an image of men’s jeans. You are to illustrate these jeans as a trade float
with front and back views, in proportion, showing all construction detail. You must do this on the A3 bank sheet. You must use a black felt tip pen to finish your sketch.
2.5 Annotate a pair of men’s jeans
Using your trade sketch from 2.4, annotate the drawing by adding a descriptive title, labelling the design details, and suggesting a fabric option for the garment characterised by the style of your drawing. All writing must be neat and accurate. You must made a minimum of 5 annotations.
2.6 Perform quality check
Using the Quality Checklist provided in the Student Assessment Booklet check the quality of your trade sketch and rectify any problems before submitting your work to your lecturer.

Simulated workshop environment. Students will need access to light boxes, suitable drawing desks and seating. Garments to be drawn need to be hung on a mannequin or

Assessment conditions
The teaching methodology for this unit is a studio based Simulated workplace environment as provided by TAFE SA.
Level of lecturer support – students to be provided with lecturer support during designated class times and after hours via email.
Assessments to be completed as “open book”.

Assessment submission:
Information on submitting assessments will be provided by your lecturer. If you are unable to hand up the assessment as directed by your lecturer, assessments must be delivered to the Fashion Office and placed in the location provided. The work must be clearly labelled using the submission slip available from the office. Resulting:
PA: Pass achieved – non graded
All learning outcomes of the unit of competency have been achieved. The student has been assessed and satisfies all the requirements for the unit of competency.
F: Fail – Competency outcomes not achieved
The student has attempted ALL of the requirements for the assessment and the work has been assessed as not competent. W: Withdrawn – Competency not completed
The student has engaged in some learning activity and has withdrawn before completing all of the assessment criteria or, the student has engaged in some learning
activity and stopped attending or submitting assessments The appeals process is provided as part of the TAFE SA Assessment Policy and Procedures which can be downloaded from the TAFE SA website www.tafesa.edu.au.
