2022-Spring: FIRT-1338-V01-Fire Protection Systems Chapter 1 Assignment 1. What is the difference between fire and combustion? Fire is the rapid oxidation process that produces varying degrees of heat, light and flame, while combustion refers to the chemical reaction process in which a combustible material and an oxidizing agent (typically the oxygen in the air) producing heat, energy, and other products that continuously sustain or promote the process. 2. What are the elements of the fire triangle? A fire triangle depicts the relationship between the 3 elements of oxygen, fuel and heat. 3. What are the elements of the fire tetrahedron? A fire tetrahedron includes fuel, oxygen, heat and the chemical chain reaction as an essential part of the combustion process. 4. What are the different types of fire? There are 4 different types of fire, diffusion flame, smoldering, spontaneous combustion or self- heating, and premixed flame. - Diffusion flame: referred to as the most recognizable type of fire or a natural flaming fire. - Smoldering: the evident glow of the burning material, while there is no flame with a smoldering fire, there is still a source of significant heat. - Spontaneous combustion: when a fire starts without a known external heat source applied to the material. - Premixed fire: a type of fire that requires fas fuel and air to mix before ignition or combustion to occur.
