Identify the Controls and Variables Mr. Jones wants to increase worker productivity. A traveling salesman insists that his tonic will do the trick. Mr. Jones is desperate and buys out the salesman. However, Mrs. Jones is skeptical. She decides to test the tonic. She creates two groups of 50 workers each in different rooms of the factory. They all have the same supplies and are assigned the same task. The task is to wrap as many gift boxes of Tinker- Toddler Tots as possible for the Charity Event. Both groups begin at the same time. Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After four hours, Mrs. Jones counts how many wrapped gift boxes each group completed. Group A wrapped 287 packages Group B wrapped 413 packages Identify the: 1. Control Group - Group B 2. Independent Variable - Special juice 3. Dependent Variable - Group A 4. What should Mrs. Jones' conclusion be? - Group B worked faster because they didn’t have the tonic and was able to concentrate more. 5. How could this experiment be improved? This experiment can be improved more by taking the time it takes for them to wrap one gift and try doing it with the same age group. Kaylona’s family is coming to visit for the holidays. She noticed a slimy green film covering the shower walls. Her friend Betty suggested she try the latest rage, apple cider vinegar. Kaylona trys to use natural cleaning products whenever possible so she decided to test Betty’s suggestion. She sprays one side of the shower with apple cider Identify the: 6. Control Group - Shower sprayed with water only 7. Independent Variable
vinegar and the other side she sprayed with water only. After 3 days of "treatment" there is no change in the appearance of the green slime on either side of the shower. - Apple cider vinegar 8. Dependent Variable - Cleaning slimy green layer 9. What was the initial observation and hypothesis? - Apple cider vinegar plays an important role in the removal process of the slimy green layer on the walls 10. What should Kaylona's conclusion be? - Apple cider vinegar is not useful in cleaning the removal of the slimy green layer. 10-year-old Benjamin loves Marvel comics. He is convinced that mice exposed to radio waves will become extra strong (maybe he's been reading too much Radioactive Man). He decides to perform an experiment. He placed 10 mice near a loudly playing radio and he put 10 mice in another room where the radio could not be heard. After 5 hours he compared the strength of each mouse from both groups of mice by placing a heavy block of wood between the mice and their food. He found that 8 out of 10 of the radio waved mice were able to push the block away. 7 out of 10 of the other mice were able to do the same. Identify the: 11. Control Group - Mice not exposed to radio waves 12. Independent Variable - Radio waves 13. Dependent Variable - Strength of mice 14. What should Benjamin's conclusion be? - Radio waves play an important role with the strength of the mice. 15. How could Benjamin's experiment be improved?
- By using the same mice and having them around the same weight. Larry loves practical jokes. The joke shop sent him a message about a new itching powder. The advertisement claimed that it was the newest, best thing on the market, it even claimed to cause 50% longer lasting itches. Interested in this product, Larry bought the itching powder. He couldn’t wait to try it out on his brother and compare it to his usual product. One test subject (his brother) is sprinkled with the original itching powder, and another test subject (his sister) was sprinkled with the new itching powder. Larry’s sister only scratched and wiggled for about 45 minutes, while his brother itched and itched for about 30 minutes longer than his sister. Identify the: 16. Control Group - His brother 17. Independent Variable - New itching powder 18. Dependent Variable - Scratching and wiggling 19. Explain whether the data supports the advertisements claims about its product. - It does not support the advertisement as the itching powder is just like the new on and lasted 30 minutes longer. Lisa is working on a science project. Her task is to answer the question: "Does Rogooti (which is a commercial hair product) affect the speed of hair growth". Her family is willing to volunteer for the experiment. 20. Describe how Lisa would perform this experiment. Identify the control group, and the independent and dependent variables in your description. She can use a tradition hair growth agent and ragooti. Control- hair growth with traditional hair agent. Independent- Ragooti Dependent- Speed of hair growth
