Lab 4: Cricket Sensory Nerve
Student Notes:
In addition to this student lab report notes, please ensure you are still following the lab
report marking scheme (that your TA provided for you in the first lab) – you could also
watch the video on e-class that goes over how to write a formal lab report for BIOL 3060
Note: This student lab report notes ONLY provide an overview of the following
components of the lab report:
•
Introduction
•
Methods
•
Results
•
Discussion
•
References
Please follow the original lab component scheme, which includes: title page, abstract,
introduction, methods, results, discussion, references, and appendix
For more information on the other sections of the lab report (title page, abstract, etc.), please
see the Student Lab Report Notes for Lab 1 (found on e-class).
Lab 4 Overview:
Lab 4 examines
compound action potentials
(CAPs)
from sensory spines on the isolated leg
from the
common cricket (
Acheta domesticus
).
These sensory spines are connected to a sensory
neuron, which is responsible for detecting external stimuli from the organism's environment.
Therefore, any external stimuli that distort the sensory spine will trigger the opening
of
mechanical-gated ion channels
that elicit an action potential to allow electrical impulses to
pass through the nerves. In addition, this lab examines how
different stimuli
,
sensory spines
,
and
angles of deflection
affect the compound action potentials.
Introduction:
•
Should start the introduction with background information (keywords). Please remember
that you should start general and then talk about more specific topics closely related to
the lab (upside-down pyramid).
Must use references (primary and secondary
references) to support background information (Do not use the lab manual as a
source!)
•
Some
topics to include in background information:
o
Sensory hairs/spines in insects (overall importance? – avoid predators)
→
relate to
the nervous system of the animal.
o
What is a sensory neuron? Describe the components of the sensory neuron. What
is the function/role of a sensory neuron in the nervous system?
o
What is a compound action potential? Describe the stages of an action potential.
Nerve impulses and functions of the mechanically gated ion channels.
Created by Marishia Agard, TA Coordinator of BIOL 3060 (Fall 2023)
2
o
Introduce the concepts covered in the various exercises [different stimuli
examined, the angles of deflection, different spines or sensory hairs respond
differently to stimuli].
•
Re-introduce rationale and objective.
•
You are required to include a hypothesis for each exercise (#1-4), and it
must
be
supported by previous literature (primary reference).
•
Conclude with brief method.
Methods:
•
Please cite the following in the method section to receive the full marks:
o
ADInstruments. (2010). Cricket Sensory Nerve.
•
Nothing is else is required for the method section.
Results:
•
You will be responsible for analyzing your data (saved on your USB) collected from the
lab. Please refer to the lab manual on how to analyze the data for each exercise.
•
The results text:
You should talk about all results from
ALL 4 exercises
from the lab.
Make sure to highlight trends and patterns you observed. Should be specific and include
quantitative data (mean±SEM for key data points).
Ensure you refer to the
figures/tables in the results text.
•
The results figures:
o
Bar graph (exercise 1)
→
must plot the
mean±SEM
of the amplitudes measured
from
15 spikes
for each stimulus (
spontaneous, tap, puff, and tap
) – refer to
page 10 of the lab manual. The bar graph would have the following axes: y-axis:
Compound action potential amplitude (
𝜇
V) and x-axis: Stimuli (spontaneous, tap,
puff, and touch). Note: The Table on page 10 of the lab manual would be
Table 1
in the appendix
of the lab report.
o
Table (exercise 2)
→
Required to make a table for exercise 2 (page 11 of lab
manual). Must include BOTH
raw
and
mean±SEM
of the amplitude for
15
spikes
each spine
.
o
Bar graph (exercise 3)
→
must plot the
mean±SEM
of amplitude for
15 spikes
for each angle of deflection – refer to page 12 of the lab manual. The bar graph
would have the following axes: y-axis: Compound action potential amplitude
(
𝜇
V) and x-axis: angles of deflection (0
o
, 90
o
, 180
o
, 270
o
). Note: The Table on
page 12 of the lab manual would be
Table 2 in the appendix
of the lab report.
•
Include figure/table captions (Reminder: Caption title must be bolded, and the caption
should be black 12pt Times New Roman font). The figure caption should be detailed by
including the following:
brief method on how the data was collected, key results,
sample size, stats, and mean
±
SEM.
•
No interpretation of the results.
•
Summary of the results for each exercise:

Medical Law & Ethics
A
24 24
Instructions
Medical laws and ethics are crucial in this field. Laws are implemented not only to ensure proper medical services are provided and
to secure patient's rights, but also to protect the provider and the staff. Though laws can be subject to change, they still cover a vast
variety of situations set forth for everyone involved. An example of what the laws cover would be providing accurate and
appropriate medical care, professionalism, communication, and security of patient information, who owns and has access to patient
medical records, and to whom and where reports can be submitted if medical malpractice is suspected.
For this discussion assignment, you will be given two scenarios; you should base your answer on your understanding and research of
medical laws and ethics. Your initial post should be 75-100 words. Once you submit…

The providers at the North Side Hospital often order hematologic tests to assist in diagnosing and treating patients. As a medical assistant,
Serenity, CMA (AAMA), uses her knowledge of hematology every day. Serenity is comfortable performing waived tests because she understands
the purpose and procedure of the tests. As a competent professional working within her scope of practice, she always follows all safety and
quality control guidelines to protect herself and others. She also is careful to ensure the accuracy of test results.
Today is busier than usual at the office and Serenity is performing an ESR for patient Edgar George (male patient in his late 30's). Dr. Latey calls
