Question
Chapter 9.1, Problem 6MI
Summary Introduction
To complete:
The diagram of the cell cycle and describe the main events in each stage.
Introduction:
The cell cycle is the ordered sequence of events that occur in a cell when a cell prepares for its division. The cell cycle is a four-stage process. The cell cycle consists of interphase, followed by mitosis and cytokinesis phase. Interphase includes gap1 (G1), synthesis (S-phase) and gap 2 (G2) phase.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 6MI
The sequence of events in the cell cycle is given below:
S. No. | Event |
1 | Mitosis |
2 | Cytokinesis |
3 | G1 or Gap 1 |
4 | S phase or synthesis |
5 | G2 or Gap 2 |
Explanation of Solution
- Mitotic division or karyokinesis: It is further divided into sub-phases such as prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. Nucleus and chromosomes divide into two sets.
- Cytokinesis: After karyokinesis, cytoplasm divides to from two daughter cells.
- G1 phase: This is also called Gap1 phase. During this phase, cells makes protein and its size increases.
- S phase: This is also called synthesis phase during which replication of DNA takes place.
- G2 phase: This is also called Gap 2 phase. Cell continues to grow in this phase and later the cell gets ready for its division.
