Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The electron-dot formula and resonance description for the given molecules has to be drawn.
Concept introduction:
Electron-dot structure, otherwise known as Lewis dot diagrams or electron dot structures that show the bond between atoms and lone pairs of electrons that are present in the molecule. Lewis structure represents each atom and their position in structure using the chemical symbol. Excess electrons forms the lone pair are given by pair of dots, and are located next to the atom.
Resonance:
The electron structure of a given molecule contains delocalized bonding via possible structure of all electron-dot formulas is known as resonance description.
One form of resonance stable structure is converted into other forms. It possible in both single and multiple bonds containing molecule. The electron-dot formulas differing only in the placement of single and double bonds

- Methyl isocyanate, CH3 -N= C = O, is used in the industrial synthesis of a type of pesticide and herbicide known as a carbamate. As a historical note, an industrial accident in Bhopal, India, in 1984 resulted in leakage of an unknown quantity of this chemical into the air. An estimated 200,000 people were exposed to its vapors, and over 2000 of these people died. Q.) Write a Lewis structure for methyl isocyanate and predict its bond angles. What is the hybridization of its carbonyl carbon? Of its nitrogen atom?arrow_forwardN O2 dimerises to form N2O4. Why?arrow_forwardWhat is the Lewis diagram of ethanethiol, C2H6Sarrow_forward
- Draw all the resonance structures and resonance hybrid of PO43-arrow_forwardA particular allotrope of nitrogen, N4, was first detected in 2002. (Allotrope just means a chemical form in which an element can exist. Oxygen, for example, has two allotropes on earth: O2 and O3.) The all-nitrogen compound only lasts a short while before breaking down to N2. The compound cannot be isolated, so its structure is not yet confirmed experimentally; we can only hypothesize what its bonding and shape are. This allotrope is generally believed to be either a single ring of four nitrogens or a single chain of four nitrogens. 1. Draw the Lewis structure for both the linear form and the single ring form.arrow_forwardA particular allotrope of nitrogen, N4, was first detected in 2002.
