Concept explainers
Interpretation:Differentiate between ‘independent’ and ‘dependent’ in reference to the inventory control models and MRP (material resource planning).
Concept Introduction:Inventory management relates to two broad types of items-the demand dependent items and independent items. As the terms indicate, the former items are dependent on the demand of some other item while the independent items are not related to or dependent on the demand for any other item.
Both the types of items are dealt with by different models. MRP, works for demand related items primarily those linked to the finished product/s to be manufactured. Demand may be known or uncertain. Other inventory models are applicable to items independent of demand.

- The inventory control models discussed in Chapters 4 and 5 are often labeledindependent demand models and MRP is often labeled a dependent demandsystem. What do the terms independent and dependent mean in this context?arrow_forwardA initially assume that Phi wants to minimize his inventory requirements. Each fan consists of a housing assembly, two grills and a fan assembly. The housing assembly consists of a frame, two supports and a handle. - Production Quantity Model A manufacturing company operates 300 days a year with an annual demand for component C of 43,200 units. The fabrication department at the company is able to produce 800 units per day and send them over to assembly while production is in progress. If assembly sends a work order for 11,200 units of component C to fabrication, how long is the order receipt period? Given the order quantity in the previous question, what is the average inventory level for component C?arrow_forward(a) Give examples of independent and related dependent demand (b) APL company assembles and sales an electronics device (ED) on a contract basis. End item ED has composed of 3 units of subassembly BG and 5 units of component DD. BG is assembled using 3 DDs and 4 FCs. There are orders of 500 and 875 units of the device (ED) at the beginning of week 6 and week 8. In assembling BG, an extra 20 percent scrap allowance must be added. DD can only be ordered in whole cases of 400 units per case. One case of DD is received in each of week 1 and week 2. Also, there are 200 units of BG and 425 units of DD now on hand. The lead time for the item BG, DD, and FC is 2 weeks and that is for the item ED is 1 week.i. Calculate the required number of DD and FC for producing 100 units of ED. There is no stock of any item. ii. Prepare a material requirements plan for the component DD.arrow_forwardSemans is a manufacturer that produces bracket assemblies.
