A block of mass m1 = 20.0 kg is connected to a block of mass m2 = 30.0 kg by a massless string that passes over a light, frictionless pulley. The 30.0-kg block is connected to a spring that has negligible mass and a force constant of k = 250 N/m as shown in Figure P7.73. The spring is un-stretched when the system is as shown in the figure, and the incline is frictionless. The 20.0-kg block is pulled a distance h = 20.0 cm down the incline of angle θ = 40.0° (so that the 30.0-kg block is 40.0 cm above the floor) and released from rest. Find the speed of each block when the 30.0-kg block is 20.0 cm above the floor (that is, when the spring is unstretched).

- An inclined plane of angle = 20.0 has a spring of force constant k = 500 N/m fastened securely at the bottom so that the spring is parallel to the surface as shown in Figure P6.61. A block of mass m = 2.50 kg is placed on the plane at a distance d = 0.300 m from the spring. From this position, the block is projected downward toward the spring with speed v = 0.750 m/s. By what distance is the spring compressed when the block momentarily comes to rest?arrow_forwardIn a laboratory experiment, 1 a block of mass M is placed on a frictionless table at the end of a relaxed spring of spring constant k. 2 The spring is compressed a distance x0 and 3 a small ball of mass m is launched into the block as shown in Figure P11.22. The ball and block stick together and are projected off the table of height h. Find an expression for the horizontal displacement of the ballblock system from the end of the table until it hits the floor in terms of the parameters given. FIGURE P11.22arrow_forwardA block of mass m = 2.00 kg is attached to a spring of force constant k = 500 N/m as shown in Figure P7.15. The block is pulled to a position xi = 5.00 cm to the right of equilibrium and released from rest. Find the speed the block has as it passes through equilibrium if (a) the horizontal surface is frictionless and (b) the coefficient of friction between block and surface is k = 0.350. - A massless spring of constant k = 78.4 N/m is fixed on the left side of a level track. A block of mass m = 0.50 kg is pressed against the spring and compresses it a distance d, as in Figure P7.74. The block (initially at rest) is then released and travels toward a circular loop-the-loop of radius R = 1.5 m. The entire track and the loop-the-loop are frictionless, except for the section of track between points A and B. Given that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the track along AB is k = 0.30 and that the length of AB is 2.5 m, determine the minimum compression d of the spring that enables the block to just make it through the loop-the-loop at point C. Hint: The force exerted by the track on the block will be zero if the block barely makes it through the loop-the-loop. Figure P7.74arrow_forwardReview. This problem extends the reasoning of Problem 41 in Chapter 9. Two gliders are set in motion on an air track. Glider 1 has mass m1 = 0.240 kg and moves to the right with speed 0.740 m/s. It will have a rear-end collision with glider 2, of mass m2 = 0.360 kg, which initially moves to the right with speed 0.120 m/s. A light spring of force constant 45.0 N/m is attached to the back end of glider 2 as shown in Figure P9.41. When glider 1 touches the spring, superglue instantly and permanently makes it stick to its end of the spring. (a) Find the common speed the two gliders have when the spring is at maximum compression. (b) Find the maximum spring compression distance. The motion after the gliders become attached consists of a combination of (1) the constant-velocity motion of the center of mass of the two-glider system found in part (a) and (2) simple harmonic motion of the gliders relative to the center of mass. (c) Find the energy of the center-of-mass motion. (d) Find the energy of the oscillation.arrow_forwardA small ball is tied to a string and hung as shown in Figure P8.34. It is released from rest at position 1, and, during the swing, the string meets a fixed peg as shown. Explain why position 2 at which the ball comes momentarily to rest must be at the same height as position 1.arrow_forward
- - Xc + d 004 m 3. Two identical springs of spring constant k are on opposite sides of a flat table as shown in the figure. A block of mass m compresses the left-hand spring from its equilibrium extension by a distance rc. The block is released and detaches from the left spring at its equilibrium extension and eventually runs into and compresses the right-hand spring a distance d away. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface of the table is uk. (a) If µk = 0, find an expression for the speed of the block when it detaches from the first spring in terms of 9, k, xc, m, d. The spring constant of the spring is 106 N/m. Assume that friction is negligble in these problems. Assume the spring is initially uncompressed. 2.95 cm (B) If the mass initially compresses the spring 1.14 cm, what is the maximum height the mass rises to on the incline? Assume the mass is released from rest. (C) If the mass is released from rest at a height of 1.97 cm, what is the compression of the spring when the mass has a speed of 45.4 cm/s?arrow_forwardA cube, whose mass is 0.700 kg, is attached to a spring with a force constant of 132 N/m. The cube is pulled to the right a distance A = 0.130 m from its equilibrium position (the vertical dashed line) and held motionless. The cube is then released from rest.
