Introduction
Deviance is behavior that violates norms or values held by most members of a society at a given time and context. Norms and values vary between cultures, so definitions of what qualifies as deviance also vary.
Explanation of Solution
Answer and explanation
Sociologists define deviance as behavior that is not compatible with the values or norms of a society. If most members of a society expect men to tip their caps to passing women, a man who does not tip his cap would be deviant. This concept is a little slippery because norms and values vary among cultures and subcultures, making the definition of deviance vary as well. For example, a 90 year old competitive skateboarder would be deviant from the expected behavior for that demographic.
