Interpretation: To determine the reason why Rutherford’s model of the atom is known as the planetary model
Concept Introduction: The nucleus, as defined by Ernest Rutherford, is the atom's microscopic, dense center. The charge in the nucleus is positive. Particles with a negative charge are called electrons. The nucleus is circled by electrons.
Answer to Problem 27A
Rutherford explains the structure of atoms like a solar system that’s why it will be called a planetary model.
Explanation of Solution
According to Rutherford's atomic model, the electrons orbit around the positively charged nucleus as a planet revolves around the sun. This model is hence referred to as the planetary model.
The Rutherford atomic model states that an atom's positive charge and the majority of its mass are contained in a very small volume. He referred to this part of the atom as the nucleus. According to Rutherford's theory, an atom's nucleus is surrounded by electrons that are negatively charged.
