Chapter 27.5, Problem 1TC
Summary Introduction
To explain:’
How does a fertility rate above RLF produce positive feedback for population growth.
Introduction:
Replacement level fertility (RLF) is the term which referred to the average number of the children born per women, at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next generation, without immigration or emigration. The replacement level fertility is 2.1 children per women this is because not all children survive to maturity.

- What is the relationship between generation time and the rate of population growth?arrow_forwardThe maximum sustainable yield (MSY) is the highest rate at which a potentially renewable resource can be used indefinitely without reducing its available supply. The idea is to remove individuals while keeping the population at a constant growth rate and size, but to find the size where the harvest is maximized. The greater the growth rate, the more individuals you can remove and not change the population size. Where is the growth rate at its maximum? To find this look at your logistic model simulator. 1. Set up a hypothetical salmon population where the carrying capacity is 20,000 fish, the maximumr is 0.7. According the the maximum sustainable yield (MSY), at what population size should we maintain the salmon while fishing?arrow_forwardHow can the growth of a population be slowed by its own numbers?arrow_forward

Draw a second graph with a growth curve for a population that starts with 10 individuals and undergoes logistic growth. The second graph should have a carrying capacity of 100 individuals. (C) a) Which type of population growth appears to continue unchecked? b) The growth curves in the Model are often referred to using the letters of the alphabet they resemble. The logistic growth curve is sometimes referred to as an S-curve. What letter would you use to describe the exponential growth curve? c) What causes the population to slow down during logistic growth? d) The maximum population an environment can sustain is affected by environmental factors that cause the population to level out or become stable. - Where is the growth rate the fastest on a logistic growth curve? at the inflection point in the very beginning when the population is small right before it reaches the carrying capacityarrow_forwardTwo alien species compete for resources on a planet far far away. Their initial populations are 100 and 1000 and their specific growth rate is 0.02263/year and 0.02/year and their yield coefficient is 0.95 and 0.85 respectively. When the first species begins to consume more than 50% of the resources the other population will be inevitably be annihilated. How many years does it take for this to occur? Answer:arrow_forwardIn 2010, 150 coyotes (Canis latrans) were counted in Pierce County, WA. And the growth rate is 14 coyortes per year. Following a survey of the community, the social carrying capacity of coyotes was around 500 individuals. How long will it take for the coyote population to reach this human tolerance goal? Biologists have estimated the biological carrying capacity for coyotes in the county to be 1000 individuals. How long will it be before the population reaches carrying capacity using exponential growth? Would it take more or less time for the population to reach carrying capacity if using logistic growth equation and assumptions?arrow_forward
- In many rural areas, stray cats are a problem as they may return to being wild feral cats that have not been spayed or neutered can reproduce, which may result in a population of feral cats. One pair of cats can produce 12 kittens in one year, and half of these kittens are female; this increased population would potentially produce 84 kittens in the second year. In 5-years, the population could reach almost 33000 feral cats. A) What conditions or factors would have to be in place for the population to achieve its biotic potential?arrow_forwardA human population of 10,000 individuals has a birth rate of 90 per every 1000 persons and a death rate of 16 per every 1000 individuals. Calculate the yearly increase of the population growth. a) 740 individuals/year b) 74 individuals/year c) 10,074 individuals/year d) 11,074 individuals/yeararrow_forwardA population is expected to grow exponentially when the population size is close but below the carrying capacity of the environment. when the population size is exceeding the carrying capacity of the environment. when the birth rate changes as a function of the population after a severe population bottleneck.arrow_forward
