Figure CQ10.15 shows a side view of a child’s tricycle with rubber tires on a horizontal concrete sidewalk. If a string were attached to the upper pedal on the far side and pulled forward horizontally, the tricycle would start to roll forward. (a) Instead, assume a siring is attached to the lower pedal on the near side and pulled forward horizontally as shown by A. Will the tricycle start to roll? If so, which way? Answer the same questions if (b) the string is pulled forward and upward as shown by B, (c) if the string is pulled straight down as shown by C, and (d) if the string is pulled forward and downward as shown by D. (e) What If? Suppose the string is instead attached to the rim of the front wheel and pulled upward and backward as shown by E. Which way does the tricycle roll? (f) Explain a pattern of reasoning, based on the figure, that makes it easy to answer questions such as these. What physical quantity must you evaluate?

- As shown in Figure OQ10.9, a cord is wrapped onto a cylindrical reel mounted on a fixed, frictionless, horizontal axle. When does the reel have a greater magnitude of angular acceleration? (a) When the cord is pulled down with a constant force of 50 N. (b) When an object of weight 50 N is hung from the cord and released. (c) The angular accelerations in parts (a) and (b) are equal. (d) It is impossible to determine. Figure OQ10.9arrow_forwardIn testing an automobile tire for proper alignment, a technicianmarks a spot on the tire 0.200 m from the center. He then mountsthe tire in a vertical plane and notes that the radius vector to thespot is at an angle of 35.0 with the horizontal. Starting from rest, the tire is spun rapidly with a constant angular acceleration of 3.00 rad/s2. a. What is the angular speed of the wheel after 4.00 s? b. What is the tangential speed of the spot after 4.00 s? c. What is the magnitude of the total accleration of the spot after 4.00 s?" d. What is the angular position of the spot after 4.00 s?arrow_forwardFigure P10.82 shows a vertical force applied tangentially to a uniform cylinder of weight Fg. The coefficient of static friction between the cylinder and all surfaces is 0.500. The force P is increased in magnitude until the cylinder begins to rotate. In terms of Fg, find the maximum force magnitude P that can be applied without causing the cylinder to rotate. Suggestion: Show that both friction forces will be at their maximum values when the cylinder is on the verge of slipping. Figure P10.82arrow_forward
- The fishing pole in Figure P10.22 makes an angle of 20.0 with the horizontal. What is the torque exerted by the fish about an axis perpendicular to the page and passing through the anglers hand if the fish pulls on the fishing line with a force F=100N at an angle 37.0 below the horizontal? The force is applied at a point 2.00 m from the anglers hands. Figure P10.22arrow_forwardProblems 62 and 63 are paired. 62. C A disk is rotating around a fixed axis that passes through its center and is perpendicular to the face of the disk. Consider a point on the rim of the disk (point R) and another point halfway between the center and the rim (point H) at one particular instant. a. How does the angular speed v of the disk at point H compare with the angular speed of the disk at point R? b. How does the tangential speed of the disk at point H compare with the tangential speed of the disk at point R? c. Suppose we pick a point H on the disk at random (by throwing a dart, for example), and we compare the speeds at that point with the speeds at point R. How will the answers to parts (a) and (b) be different? Explain.arrow_forwardA uniform cylindrical grinding wheel of mass 50.0 kg and diameter 1.0 m is turned on by an electric motor. The friction in the bearings is negligible. (a) What torque must be applied to the wheel to bring it from rest to 120 rev/min in 20 revolutions? (b) A tool whose coefficent of kinetic friction with the wheel with a force of 40.0 N. What torque must be supplied by the motor to keep the wheel rotating at a constant angular velocity?arrow_forward
- Consider two objects with m1 m2 connected by a light string that passes over a pulley having a moment of inertia of I about its axis of rotation as shown in Figure P10.44. The string does not slip on the pulley or stretch. The pulley turns without friction. The two objects are released from rest separated by a vertical distance 2h. (a) Use the principle of conservation of energy to find the translational speeds of the objects as they pass each other. (b) Find the angular speed of the pulley at this time.arrow_forwardA system of point particles is rotating about a fixed axis at 4 rev/s. The particles are fixed with respect to each other. The masses and distances to the axis of the point particles are m1=0.1kg , r1=0.2m , m2=0.05kg , r2=0.4m , m3=0.5kg , r3=0.01m . (a) What is the moment of inertia of the system? (b) What is the rotational kinetic energy of the system?arrow_forwardA competitive diver leaves the diving board and falls toward the water with her body straight and rotating slowly. She pulls her arms and legs into a tight tuck position. What happens to her rotational kinetic energy? (a) It increases. (b) It decreases. (c) It stays the same. (d) It is impossible to determine.arrow_forward
- Consider the disk in Problem 71. The disks outer rim hasradius R = 4.20 m, and F1 = 10.5 N. Find the magnitude ofeach torque exerted around the center of the disk. FIGURE P12.71 Problems 71-75arrow_forwardVlad needs to draw water from a deep well. He is using a bucket that is connected by rope (negligible mass) to a wooden axle at the top of the well. By cranking a handle at the end of the axle, Vlad is able to unwind the rope around the axle and move the bucket downward. The radius of the axle is R = 30 cm. The bucket is traveling downward at speed vi = 25 cm/s when the handle slips out of Vlad’s hand. As the rope unwinds and the bucket falls downward, the axle spins freely with an angular acceleration whose magnitude is α = 4.5 rad/s^2. The bucket falls through a distance of d = 7.0 m before crashing into the water. 1. What is the angular speed ωf of the axle when the bucket first hits the water? 2. As d → 0, what limit does ωf approach and why?arrow_forwardA bicycle mechanic is checking a road bike’s chain. He applies a 45 N force to a pedal at the angle shown while keeping the wheel from rotating. The pedal is 17 cm from the center of the crank; the gear has a diameter of 16 cm. What is the tension in the chain?arrow_forward
